5 Preschool education Its available to children between the ages of two and five. There is usually no written timetable. Much time is spent in modeling from clay or drawing, reading or singing.

6 Primary school Children from five to eleven study in primary schools. Education focuses on the basic skills of reading, writing, maths.

7 Secondary school Children from eleven to sixteen study there. From fourteen to sixteen pupils are taught in groups that relate to their future examination (GCSEs). Most secondary schools are comprehensive. It means that pupils don't have to pass an entrance examination.

8 Secondary school include the three 'core' subjects Mathematics, English and Science and seven 'foundation' subjects of Technology, History, Geography, a foreign language, Art, Music and Physical Education.

9 Further education For people over 16 the Open University offers degrees for people who do not have a formal education, or who are older. Students study at home and then post them off to a tutor for marking. Most courses take six years.

10 All British universities are private institutions. Students have to pay fees and living costs, but every student may obtain a personal grant from local authorities. Students have lectures, and regular seminars. High education

11 Students who obtain their Bachelor degree can apply to take a further degree course. There are two different types of postgraduate courses — the Master's degree (MA or MSc) and higher degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
