THE APPALACHIANS ARE ONE OF THE OLDEST MOUNTAIN RANGES IN THE WORLD.

Some scientists think that these peaks once rose miles into the sky. Yet today the Appalachians are not very high mountains. Wind, water, and ice have worn them down. (erosion)

In the late 1700 ’ s, people began building small factories, or mills, that used the power of running water to run machines.

During the 1800 ’ s mills became bigger and employed more people.

Factories brought the Industrial Revolution to the Northeast. During the Industrial Revolution, new power-driven machines replaced hand tools.

Today few factories use water for power, they use electricity. The Northeast, is still a center for manufacturing.

EVERY STATE IN THE NORTHEAST, EXCEPT VERMONT, IS WITHIN EASY REACH OF THE ATLANTIC OCEAN. Eight of these states have long coastlines.

. Much of the wealth of the region comes from trade. NORTH EASTERN ECONOMY

BAY- A PART OF AN OCEAN OR LAKE THAT CUTS DEEPLY INTO THE LAND HARBORS- PLACES WHERE BOAT S CAN DOCK

Aquaculture- the business of raising fish in watery “ farms ” Some fish are raised indoors in giant tanks. Other farmers dig huge ponds to raise their fish.

THE CHANGING NORTHEAST

The Northeast has the third largest population of all the five regions. It has the smallest area. This means that people live much closer together there than they do in other regions.

Rural- “ of the countryside ” Urban- “ of the city ” People began moving to the cities

WHY DID THIS CHANGE TAKE PLACE? Large factories were built. These factories needed workers. These workers had to live close by.

CITIES IN THE NORTHEAST HAVE CONTINUED TO CHANGE people began moving to suburbs, which are communities just outside a city A city and its suburbs together is called a metropolitan area.
