NRMCA Green Star Certification

NRMCA Green Star Certification What is ? The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association’s (NRMCA) certification program in which individual concrete plants are recognized for supporting the ready mixed concrete industry’s efforts towards achieving environmental excellence – Industry specific – Focuses on what is important to the industry Certifications made on a plant-by-plant basis Similar to NRMCA plant certifications

NRMCA Green Star Certification What is ? The NRMCA Green-Star Program serves as a useful mechanism to recognize those within the industry who have achieved or are actively working towards environmental excellence and/or a demonstrable reduction of environmental impacts, following the principles of sustainability. It will also provide a formal opportunity for the recognition of those companies through a rigorous, structured certification process capable of withstanding third-party oversight.

NRMCA Green Star Certification Why Should YOU Care? Potential compliance enforcement – Fines, other? Some aspects generate revenue Future permitting Opportunity to change public’s perception of the industry The ENVIRONMENTAL OPPORTUNITY! American Concrete’s goal is to have all plants certified by 2014

Benefits of Certification NRMCA Green Star Certification

Requirements Must have an Environmental Management System (EMS) – Tool for environmental benchmarking & continual improvement – Paves the way towards achieving environmental excellence – Improvement in compliance levels – Identification of and reduction of environmental impacts

NRMCA Green Star Certification First Plant: Webster City American Concrete’s first plant (Webster City) was certified on April 22, 2010 This was the FIRST plant certified in the state of Iowa Webster City plant

NRMCA Green Star Certification American Concrete Environmental Policy American Concrete is dedicated to continued excellence, leadership, and stewardship in protecting the environment, the health and safety of our employees, and the members of the communities in which we work and live. Our commitment is to exceed customer expectations and to fully comply with federal, state, and local environmental regulations. Within the design and production of product, in collaboration with our customers and suppliers, we strive to eliminate pollution generated at the source, to use renewable materials, and to maximize the reclamation and recycling of materials to minimize adverse impact on the environment. American Concrete will review our environmental policies and performance on an annual basis and continuously improve our performance.

NRMCA Green Star Certification NRMCA Green-Star Facility Components Identification of key environmental aspects (activities or processes; “cause”) and the resulting environmental impacts (the “effects”) in the following six areas: Water Quality Management (process water discharges, storm water discharges, water conservation, reuse and recycling) Air Quality Management (airborne process emissions, airborne fugitive emissions, vehicular emissions)

NRMCA Green Star Certification NRMCA Green-Star Facility Components Hazardous Materials Management (petroleum and chemical usage, fuel consumption, petroleum and chemical spill/leak prevention, spill prevention control and counter-measures (SPCC)) Solid Materials Management (returned concrete management, concrete fines, stone and sand) Community Issues (noise and aesthetics) Sustainability (energy conservation and recycling efforts) Webster City Plant

NRMCA Green Star Certification NRMCA Green-Star Facility Components Self-evaluation program to gauge regulatory compliance and operational status Comprehensive (i.e., covering all areas of environmental compliance pertinent and specific to the ready mixed concrete industry) Objective (i.e., the self-evaluation procedure should be performed preferably by someone lacking a clear, direct subjective interest in the results of the procedure) Regular (should occur at least once per EMS cycle) Documented

NRMCA Green Star Certification NRMCA Green-Star Facility Components Comprehensive environmental training program with emphasis on NRMCA training courses or equivalent Public outreach program (website, newsletter, plant tour with local community, etc.)

NRMCA Green Star Certification Green-Star Aspects & Impacts Components Understanding your plant’s aspects and impacts can help minimize the environmental liability of your company:  Control measures in place Engineering controls SOPs Training  Permits  Plans Reviewed and updated?
