HOW TO BECOME A FAIRTRADE TOWN March 2014 The story in pictures...

Fairtrade Bournemouth & The Earth Charter In February 2008, Bournemouth Borough Council became the first local authority in the UK to endorse the Earth Charter, demonstrating the town’s commitment to sustainability and ecological integrity. Achieving Fairtrade Town status for Bournemouth will be a major milestone and send a strong signal about the town’s ethical and global intentions.

The Fairtrade Bournemouth Campaign In 2011, the campaign to make Bournemouth a Fairtrade Town officially began. The Bournemouth Fairtrade Town Steering Group is in charge of organising and promoting the campaign, helping to get Fairtrade messages into schools, businesses and the community. Bournemouth’s residents have come together through events and campaign activities to promote Fairtrade products and encourage others to make ethical consumer choices.

The 5 Goals In order to achieve Fairtrade Town status, Bournemouth must: 1.Gain Council support via a resolution & agree to serve Fairtrade products; 2.Have a range of Fairtrade products readily available in 29 retail and 15 catering outlets; 3.Have 37 faith groups, 12 workplaces, 12 schools and community organisations supporting and using Fairtrade products - led by a flagship employer; 4.A campaign to raise awareness and understanding of Fairtrade across the community; 5.A local Fairtrade Town steering group to ensure the continual development of the Fairtrade Town campaign.

Fairtrade Bournemouth IDEA Interfaith event – March 2012 Interfaith Dorset Education & Action held an event to explore how different faiths can contribute to sustainable development - including Fairtrade.

Fairtrade Bournemouth Fairtrade Faith activity Youngsters learning about Fairtrade at Sunday School classes and running a popular Fairtrade ‘tuck-shop’ at Bournemouth’s All Saint’s Church.

Fairtrade Bournemouth Fairtrade Fortnight Roadshows – March 2012 The Bournemouth Fairtrade Steering Group took to the streets to promote Fairtrade Fortnight 2012, and survey retailers to see what products were on offer locally. In two of the main town’s shopping centres, members spoke to the public and many retailers.

Fairtrade Bournemouth WDS Fairtrade Week - June 2012 WDS – a Xerox Company – are one of the businesses working in Bournemouth (and Poole) who have been long-term Fairtrade supporters. Here, they are staging a Fairtrade promotion for staff, offering tastings and information.

Fairtrade Bournemouth Bournemouth Family Festival - July 2012 The Family Festival is one of the town’s biggest public events, with over 20,000 visitors. The Bournemouth Fairtrade stand attracted a lot of interest and out of this world supporters!

The Big Fair Bake - October 2012 Fairtrade Bournemouth Bournemouth Council staff take part in the Fairtrade Big Fair Bake The Terrace Cafe, run by Council partner Mouchel, is a key supporter of the Bournemouth Fairtrade Town bid and sells many Fairtrade products.

Big Fair Bake 2012 – SUSTAIN Meeting Fairtrade Bournemouth SUSTAIN – The Earth Charter and Sustainable Bournemouth Partnership – supports the Fairtrade Big Fair Bake. The Bournemouth Fairtrade Steering Group reports to this group, which is part of the Bournemouth 2026 local strategic partnership.

Fairtrade Bournemouth Equalities & Earth Charter Conference 16 November 2012 Fairtrade Bournemouth helped to sponsor the Diverse Dorset youth equalities conference at the Life Centre, which included awareness-raising activities and Fairtrade refreshments. Bournemouth MP Conor Burns (centre) added his support to Fairtrade. Over 200 young people attended and decided: “We need to eat Fairtrade and save the world”.

Fairtrade Bournemouth Older People’s Day - December 2012 Fairtrade supporters running a stall at Bournemouth’s Older People’s Day celebrations, with product tasting offered by The Co-operative and the neighbouring Christchurch Fairtrade Town group. Shoppers took the opportunity to sample ‘the taste of Fairtrade’.

Fairtrade Bournemouth Avonbourne & Harewood Colleges /2013 Long-term Fairtrade supporters – and now officially a Fairtrade School – Avonbourne College, are working with the school next door (Harewood) to help them become Fairtrade too! Avonbourne pupils support Fairtrade with initiatives such as their Earth Charter Days, Corgreen lunch bags, the Citrus Crew lemonade makers, competitions and cake-baking.

Fairtrade Bournemouth BU Fairtrade Fortnight 2013 Bournemouth University holds Fairtrade status and Dr Chris Shiel, Associate Professor, chairs the Bournemouth Fairtrade Town Steering Group. As would be expected of a Fairtrade University, staff and students are involved in an extensive programme of events for Fairtrade Fortnight and set up the Bournemouth Fairtrade Town Facebook page that enables competitions to be run for the public.

Fairtrade Bournemouth Green Community FairTRADE – March 2013 Bournemouth’s Green Community Fair went Fairtrade during Climate Week the established event run by the Transition Town network regularly support Fairtrade and promotes it at local events.

Fairtrade Bournemouth Arts Fair - March 2013 Bournemouth’s Art College staged an arts fair during Fairtrade Fortnight and the Fairtrade Town Steering Group were invited to offer tastings and information.

Fairtrade Bournemouth Cherry Tree Nursery - March 2013 Cherry Tree Nursery - Bournemouth’s Sheltered Workshop Opportunities Project – held a Fairtrade coffee morning during Fairtrade Fortnight and always has a stall of Fairtrade products for sale in their shop. The Nursery is also the hub of the town’s ‘One World Week’ activities, which have included lectures on Fairtrade.

Fairtrade Bournemouth Bournemouth Council Fairtrade Fortnight Competitions - March 2013 Bournemouth Council’s activities for staff during Fairtrade Fortnight 2013 included tastings and fun competitions.

Fairtrade Bournemouth Family Festival – July 2013 The Fairtrade stall at Bournemouth’s Family Festival 2013 proved a big draw. 200 bananas were given away free by sponsors The Co-operative who were on hand to tell people about their Fairtrade promotions. The Mayor of Bournemouth lent his support to the campaign and even a Fairtrade honey bee flew in!

Fairtrade Bournemouth Surya’s Story - July 2013 Surya Arts, a Bournemouth – based ‘theatre in education’ organisation, staged a touring show for schools and communities to promote Fairtrade and the Rights of the Child. Seen by over 3,000 people in the area, Surya’s Story is a magical fusion of theatre, dance and music and people were talking about it at our Fairtrade events long after it was staged.

Fairtrade Bournemouth Fairtrade promotion - October 2013 To raise awareness and recognise involvement, the Bournemouth Fairtrade Town Steering Group used the Fairtrade Foundation resources and produced certificates for partners and stickers that have been distributed at events and in libraries.

Fairtrade Bournemouth Bournemouth Fairtrade Town Flagship Employer – October 2013 Fairtrade Town Flagship Employer, the Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel, held a Sustainable Food event, pledging to make Bournemouth a Fairtrade Town. In recognition of his contribution towards Bournemouth’s Fairtrade Town bid, Executive Chef, Matthew Budden received a Bournemouth Fairtrade award on behalf of the hotel.

Fairtrade Bournemouth Wave Arts Education Agency supported Fairtrade by organising a schools competition on the theme of Fairtrade. Local media photographer, Hattie Miles, gave masterclasses in how to create effective photographs and the selected images were displayed in Bournemouth’s Central Library before touring various venues in the town to further raise awareness. Fairtrade Bournemouth Bournemouth Fairtrade Town Bid Celebration – October 2013 The Bournemouth Fairtrade Town Steering Group, community partners and friends came together to celebrate the progress made towards becoming a Fairtrade Town and present certificates to supporters to recognise their contributions.
