Apprentices Mean Business A presentation by Ben Clarke Thursday 10 th March 2016 at Queen Elizabeth's School

An apprenticeship, what’s that?  Leaving school, difficult choices?  Being influenced  Interview ready?!  Not only “earn while you learn” but a variety of useful life skills

Taking on more responsibility  HNC Production Engineering and factory consolidation  Team Leader of a manufacturing cell  Long term opportunities and bigger challenges  Why not take a visit to Superior?

Defining Superior We are an internationally recognised manufacturer of precision seals and mouldings. Our goal is to collaborate with the world’s leading manufacturers  Established in 1972  Family owned and independent  Turnover of approximately £30M  Over 1 billion parts manufactured per year  50% export turnover to 35 countries  190 employees  ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 accredited

A big opportunity…  Interview with the directors, enthusiasm, ambition and willingness to learn  Proving apprentices are talented young people  Various tasks, projects and more responsibility  Progression to Quality Manager

Where is our future talent?  Just a couple of apprentices but realisation of the potential…

Growing our own timber…  Training Manager employed!  Invested over £1M on building a state of the art academy to house a dedicated apprentice training school  Created a workshop for first year apprentices  Formed apprenticeship schemes for NVQ Level 2, 3 and 4

The results so far…  Today we have over twenty apprentices within the business  Working in various departments of the company making a key difference: Manufacturing, Engineering Design, Tool Room, Laboratory, Maintenance, Sales and Quality.

Why wouldn’t you?  Well publicised skills gap, developing potential leaders for the future  Incorrect perceptions, high calibre and talented individuals  Opportunities, responsibility and loyalty  Customer showcase and future planning

Apprentices Mean Business (AMB)  Created a network of current young apprentices passionate about apprenticeships  Increase awareness, promote apprenticeships and create more career opportunities  Share experiences at events with students, teachers and parents www.apprenticesmeanbusiness.com

How will you ensure you have the right skills in your organisation for a successful and sustainable future?
