What are the barriers that Business and Education face in Engaging with each other. How can these be overcome?

Confusion Who do businesses contact and same for schools Young Enterprise –Employability skills –Company Programmes Rotary AFC Bournemouth – Community projects DCCI Junior Chamber Career Academies Career Organisations – Ansbury Schools direct – Academies v Council run

Students not ready for work They never knew we took on apprentices even though we are in the school catchment area Schools do not invite business leaders from the local area to careers events We need more variety of businesses to come to our careers events I am too busy Typical Comments include:

Overcoming Barriers The biggest barrier is communication and this is something that we can and need to address together. How?

Communication Use today’s forum to set up contacts and further meetings to improve the link between education and business Contact Duncan Newman and his colleagues from Christchurch and East Dorset Council who will have local business contacts to build on today I would add that this is a national problem and not just Dorset

What we do

Our work with Young Enterprise and the community PcW Partner James Robinson and Gemma Chatfield, Business Services Senior, provided help and advice to a group of Year 12 students at Poole High School” - 2014 “Princecroft Willis, once again played an active role in the latest Young Enterprise company programme. Last year more than 300 young people from 21 Dorset schools gained a valuable insight into the real world of business by taking part in the innovative scheme.

Apprenticeship Events We run two apprenticeship events a year, giving students in Years 11, 12 & 13 the opportunity to: Come and find out more about what opportunities there are in accountancy Hear from our Team about their experiences Have a chance to speak to our accounts and tax apprentices on a one to one basis and ask Talk to our Training Manager

Growing our own timber… Training Manager employed! Invested over £1M on building a state of the art academy to house a dedicated apprentice training school Created a workshop for first year apprentices Formed apprenticeship schemes for NVQ Level 2, 3 and 4

The results so far… Today we have over twenty apprentices within the business Working in various departments of the company making a key difference: Manufacturing, Engineering Design, Tool Room, Laboratory, Maintenance, Sales and Quality.
