Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Singer Ella Fitzgerald The popular jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald began her career in 1934 as vocalist with Chick Webb’s swing band. After Webb’s death, Fitzgerald took over the band and later embarked on a solo career. She earned the title “First lady of Song” because her silken voice and smooth mellow tone were unparalleled. Fitzgerald’s position in popular music is unique in that she is able to move freely between jazz and pop styles.
