3 Swing Instrumentation
Swing music was typically performed by a Big Band. This consisted of a: Saxophone Section Trumpet Section Trombone Section Rhythm Section Swing music can either be played instrumentally or with a vocalist.

4 Blues Historical Context
Blues Music began at the turn of the 20th Century. Blues music evolved from the unaccompanied vocal music and oral traditions of slaves imported in West Africa. Between , 1,750,000 African American people left the south to seek better lives in the North as part of The Great Migration.

5 Jazz Cultural Context Jazz music emerged in America around the start of the 20th Century. Traditional Jazz emerged in the red-light district of the New Orleans.

6 Jazz Cultural Context continued…
The prohibition of alcohol in the USA between 1920 and 1933 led to underground venues playing music. This became known as ‘The Jazz Age.’ Due to its illicit nature, jazz got a reputation as being immoral. A number of black musicians became very famous including Louis Armstrong and Bessie Smith. But Racism was still a major problem. When Bessie Smith had a serious car crash, she was taken to a hospital that was for white people only. The hospital refused to treat her and she died.

7 Ragtime Key Innovators
Ernest Hogan was an innovator and key pioneer who helped develop the musical genre, and is credited with coming up with the term ‘Ragtime.’ Scott Joplin is the most famous Ragtime composer as he published the piano sheet music for his ‘Maple Leaf Rag’ and had a string of hits such as ‘The Entertainer’.

8 Country Sub-Genres Country music had a lot of sub-genres as it is developing even in today’s music. Examples of some of these genres are: Honky Tonk Nashville Sound Texas Country Country Rock Country Pop

9 Ragtime – Significant Technology
An example of a significant technology which helped to influence Ragtime music was the invention of the player piano. As the popularity of Ragtime occurred before sound recording was widely available, it was distributed as sheet music rather than as recordings. Therefore, Ragtime music was distributed via player piano rolls for many people to enjoy.
