HAPPY THANKSGIVING! (FELIZ DIA DE ACCIÓN DE GRACIAS)

On the 3rd Thursday of every month, Americans celebrate…

The Thanksgiving Day Tradition The Pilgrims sailed to the US aboard the Mayflower and landed at Plymouth Rock on December 11, 1620 …

They were looking for religious freedom. The first winter that the pilgrims spent in the US was very difficult and many people died. The following fall brought a great harvest. There was corn, fruits, vegetables, along with fish, and meat that was smoked over fires …

… They found they had enough food to put away for the winter!

Three Day Feast: Celebration of Survival The remaining colonists decided to celebrate with a feast and included the natives who had helped the Pilgrims survive their first year. It is believed that the Pilgrims would not have made it through the year without the help of the natives. The feast lasted three days.

Proclamation: a day of thanks! The custom of an annually celebrated Thanksgiving, held after the harvest (cosecha), continued through the years.

Besides (aparte de) the history and the tradition of giving thanks (dar gracias), the most important part about Thanksgiving Day is…

TURKEY!

Every year, families get together to share the traditional Thanksgiving Day meal.

It includes yummy food, such as… CORN PUDDING

CRANBERRY SAUCE

TURKEY WITH GRAVY

MASHED POTATOES

GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE

And APPLE PIE!

A poem giving thanks: Thanks for the fire, That keeps me warm. Thanks for my family, Keep them from harm. Thanks for the corn, Cobs stacked in a heap, Thanks for the squash, And the crops that we reap. Thanks for the grains, They’ll feed us till spring. Thanks for the cows, And the milk that they bring. Thanks for the stars, And the sun and the moon. Thanks for the snow, That’s coming here soon. Thanks for the rivers, The lakes and the seas. Thanks for the mountains. Covered in trees. Thanks for all life. And last, but not least, Thanks for the turkey We’ll have at our feast.
