Creating and Editing a Publication

What is Microsoft Office Publisher 2003?  A powerful desktop publishing program that assists you in designing and producing professional, quality documents that combine text, graphics, illustrations, and photographs.

Why not use Microsoft Word?  Includes design templates  Graphic manipulation tools  Color schemes or libraries  Advanced layout and printing tools  Multiple templates

Designing an Effective Flyer  Purpose – To communicate a single concept, notion, or product in a quick, easy-to read format  Audience – Wide, non-specific audience  Gather Data – Content for heading, bulleted list, tear-offs, other text boxes  Plan for Printing – Color or black and white  Layout – Single page with perforated tear-offs  Synthesis – Edit, proofread, and publish both print and Web publications

Some Vocabulary  Task pane – a separate window that enables users to carry out some Publisher tasks more efficiently.  Language bar – allows you to speak commands and dictate text.  Template – a tool that helps you through the design process by offering you publication options and changing your publication accordingly

More Vocabulary  Gallery – a collection of publication templates organized by type.  Color scheme – defined set of colors that complement each other when used in the same publication.  Font scheme – defined set of fonts associated with a publication  Font – the appearance and shape of the letters, numbers, and special characters.

More Vocabulary  Workspace – contains several elements similar to the document windows in other applications, as well as some elements unique to Publisher.  Page layout – contains a view of the publication, all the objects contained in it, plus the guides and boundaries for the page and its objects.  Ruler – used to measure and place objects on the page.

More Vocabulary  Layout guides – creates a grid that repeats on each page of a publication.  Boundaries – the gray lines surrounding an object  Objects – include anything you want to place in your publication (such as text, WordArt, tear- offs, graphics, pictures, bullets, lines, and Web tools.  Select – an item by clicking it  Handles – once an item is selected, it shows these

More Vocabulary  Status bar – contains the page sorter, the Object Position box, and the Object Size box.  Page sorter – displays a button for each page of your publication  Menu bar – a special toolbar displaying at the top of the window, just below the Publisher title bar.

More Vocabulary  Menu – contains a list of commands that you can use to retrieve, store, print, and manipulate data in the publication.  Keyboard shortcuts – when available, are displayed to the right of the menu commands.  Dimmed command – displays gray, or dimmed, instead of black, which indicates it is not available for the current selection.

More Vocabulary  Hidden command – a command with medium blue shading in the rectangle to the left of it on a full menu.  Toolbars – contain buttons and boxes that allow you to perform frequent tasks more quickly than when using the menu bar.  Standard toolbar – displayed just below the menu bar  Connect Text Boxes toolbar – displayed to the right of the Standard toolbar  Formatting toolbar – immediately below the Standard toolbar

More Vocabulary  Heading – displayed in the upper portion of the page layout using the major font from the font scheme  Bullet – a dot or other symbol that is places before the text to add emphasis  Tear-offs – small, ready-to-be scored text boxes with some combination of name, telephone, fax, , or address

More Vocabulary  Font size – the size of the characters  Wordwrap – allows you to type words continually without pressing the ENTER key at the end of each line

Fitting Text  Do Not Autofit – retain the font size, even if you type more words than will fit in the text box  Best fit – allows Publisher to change the font size so all text will fit in the text box
