Random Titbits: -Cabbage Leaves - Shooting - Piercing

-nudge the baby’s mouth with the nipple - wait for the baby’s mouth to open before inserting the nipple

-ensure the baby ’ s mouth encircles almost the entire areola - hold your baby close to your body

-work the milk ducts manually -switch sides only after the first breast is completely empty

Cross Cradle: - most women find most comfortable - use opposite arm to support the baby e.x. right breast use left arm - allows mother to adjust to babies needs with other hand - Good for: -infants with problems latching on -drowsy babies

Cradle Hold: - use the same arm to support the baby e.x. right breast use right arm - allows you to be discrete in public - most comfortable position for bottle feeding

Football Hold: - use same hand to support body and place legs & feet under mother’s arm - use pillow to bring baby to correct level - Good For: -large breasted women -multiple feedings -premature babies -babies that struggle latching on

Side-Laying Hold: - pillows used to support mother & child - allows mother to present both breast w/o changing sides - Good For: -night feeding

- prone position - upside-down side laying - hands and knees - Good For: - baby has trouble staying on breast - baby has trouble extending his/her tongue - baby has trouble coping with milk flow

Multiple feeding: - used for twins or triplets - use any combination of the above methods Tandem feeding: - feeding 2 children of different ages - use one of tradition holds for younger child - allow older child to position themselves

- boost immune system - promotes bonding b/w mother & child - more economic way to feed infants (price) - lower’s mother & child’s chance of breast cancer - boost I.Q. - colostrum is the perfect match for passing meconium - breast milk is more easily digested - help infants absorb nutrients better - suckling helps shrink mother’s uterus - helps mother’s lose pregnancy weight (500 cal./day) - preterm breast milk specially designed for premature infants - stabilizes the progress of endometriosis

- women on medications - women with eating disorders - women with flat or inverted nipples - women with cracked/dry nipples - women with nipple blisters - women with breast abscess - women with the breast cancer gene - women unable to maintain personal hygiene - women with concern of relapse or continued illegal drug use - breast augmentation or reduction - life threatening diseases - rheumatoid arthritis

- prevalent in European countries - beginning to emerge in America - released by prescription - donated by women with over abundance of milk - donors screened - milk pasteurized Cons: - not specialized to infants age - expensive

- Minnesota has a law that allows mother’s to breastfeed in public. - specialized nursing areas - use sling or blanket if prefer being discrete

- Minnesota is one of the few states with a law requiring employers to accommodate breastfeeding mothers returning to work. - unpaid breaks - when allowed to breastfeed at work the women miss less work - studies show women have a higher morale and return to work faster

- As of now a judge does not legally have to excuse a woman from jury duty when she is breastfeeding. Harmful Side Effects: -infections of milk ducts & engorged breast (improper weaning) Currently there is a bill in front of congress that would excuse women from Jury Duty.

- Running out of milk. - Formulas are the same as breast milk. - Pumping is a good way of knowing how much milk the mother has.

We hope you enjoyed our TIT bits on breastfeeding!!
