NEW REPORT CARD – CLARITY October 19, 2009 Parent Informational Meeting Grades 3-5 Sanders Corner Elementary School

Objectives:  To review the components of the SARC- Standards- Aligned Report Card  To give an overview of the components of the new report card for grades 3-5  To review grading keys and progress indicators  To review the characteristics that affect learning  To become familiar with samples of rubrics being used to assess student work

Components of SARC  The standards (VA SOL) describe what a student should know and be able to do.  The standards-aligned curriculum directs the teachers ensuring that the instruction addresses the standards  Assessments measure the extent to which a student has mastered essential skills  The report card allows the teacher to communicate a student’s progress toward meeting standards at regular intervals throughout the school year.

Grading Key – will be assigned to each major curricular area ( Reading, Math, Social Science, Language Arts, and Science)  A= Outstanding  B= Very Good  C= Satisfactory  D=Needs Improvement  F= Not Performing

Progress Indicators for the Topic Statements 4 = Exceeds Standard: In addition to meeting the standard, the student makes application beyond grade level expectations, 3 = Meets Standard: Student consistently meets and demonstrates mastery of current grade level expectations 2 = Progressing Towards Standard With assistance, student demonstrates partial mastery of current grade level expectations 1 = Below Standard: With assistance, student struggles to demonstrate partial mastery of current grade level expectations ● = Denotes knowledge or skill not assessed at this time

SAMPLE RUBRIC Math Topic Statement Computes Accurately 4 = Exceeds Standard 3 = Meets Standard 2 = Progressing Toward Standard 1 = Performing Below Standard 4 = 95% - 100% accuracy on computation assessment 3= 85% - 95% accuracy on computation assessment 2 =75% - 85% accuracy on computation assessment 1 = < 75% accuracy on computation assessment

SAMPLE RUBRIC Language Arts Topic Statement Edits writing for capitalization and punctuation 4 = Exceeds Standard 3 = Meets Standard 2 = Progressing Toward Standard 1 = Performing Below Standard 4 = A majority of the sentences have correct capitalization and punctuation. 3= Many of the sentences have correct capitalization and punctuation. 2 = Some of the sentences have correct capitalization and punctuation. 1 = Few or none of the sentences have correct capitalization and punctuation.

READING LEVEL STANDARDS Reading levels will be noted as: A= Above levelO= On levelB= Below level DRA levels as noted below will be one measure that will be used to determine the level. Small group work and individual assessments will also be utilized each grading period. GradeFirst Quarter Second Quarter Third Quarter Fourth Quarter
