Let’s Compare Side by Side! Traditional Letter Grades Students earn one grade for each subject. Letter grades do not tell parents which skills their child has mastered or whether he or she is working at grade level. Traditionally, scores are averaged for the whole grading period. Standards Based Grades Each subject is explained further by a list of skills. Measures how well an individual student is doing in relation to the grade level standards and informs us what students have actually learned and know. Ratings based on consistency of performance over time.

Let’s Look at the Report Card Keys K-1 Performance Grade Key K-1 Effort Grade Key Grade 1 – Achievement Grade Key Grade 1 – Academic Grade Key

K-1 Performance Grade Key 4 = Exceeds Standard: The student independently and consistently exceeds grade level concepts and skills with high quality work reflecting higher thinking skills. 3 = Meets Standard: The student demonstrates proficiency of grade level concepts and skills, with accuracy, quality, and independence. 2 = Progressing Toward Standard: The student demonstrates progress toward grade level concepts and skills, given support and assistance. 1 = Beginning Demonstration of Standard: The student demonstrates a beginning understanding of grade level concepts and skills, given support and assistance. NA = Not Assessed at this time Page 2

Achievement of the Standards Students are expected to demonstrate proficient achievement of state standards by the end of the year. Proficiency must be demonstrated consistently over time.

K-1 Effort Grade Key E = Excellent: Demonstrates consistent outstanding participation. Strives beyond expectations with class assignments and homework. Is highly motivated and well organized. S = Satisfactory: Participates much of the time. Completes class assignments and homework. Is attentive, motivated, and organized. N = Needs improvement: Rarely participates. Frequently does not complete assignments or homework. Is often inattentive and poorly organized.

Grade 1 Achievement Level Grade Key A = Above Level: The student is performing and being instructed at an instructional level above what is expected for the current grade placement. O = On Level: The student is performing and being instructed at the expected instructional level for the current grade placement. B = Below Level: The student is performing and being instructed at an instructional level below what is expected for the current grade placement. The strategies and materials used are also below level.

Grade 1 Academic Grade Key A = 90-100% - Outstanding Progress B = 80-89% - Above Average Progress C = 70-79% - Average Progress D = 60-69% - Lowest Acceptable Progress F = 0-59% - Failing NA = Not assessed at this time

Report Card Standards: Language Arts Report Cards Standards are written using the ELA CCSS Strands. ELA Report Card Standards were developed by condensing CCSS standards within each strand. Report Card Standards indicate what the student should know and be able to do.

Report Card Standards: Mathematics Report Cards Standards are written using the Mathematics CCSS Clusters from each Domain. Report Card Standards indicate what the student should know and be able to do measured by the standards within those clusters.

Report Card Standards: Other Subjects Science & Social Studies Report Card Standards were developed by condensing the NGSS standards within each category. Art, Music, Physical Education were developed to address NGSS standards and a continuum of growth within each content area.
