Ventura County Children’s Oral Health Collaborative

Vision Eliminate Untreated Tooth Decay for Children in Ventura County

Mission The Ventura County Children’s Oral Health Collaborative strengthens the system of oral health education and care by:  Involving parents  Working together  Raising awareness  Facilitating communication  Serving as a clearinghouse  Encouraging best and promising practices  Developing resources Sharing data  Advocating for policy changes

What does this mean in Ventura County?  By age 5, 37% of children seen by the Ventura Public Health Oral Health Education Program had not been to a dentist*  18,000 kids (0-18) have never visited a dentist.  9,000 kids came from families who could not afford dental care.  Ventura Co. is the largest county in CA that does not have a county wide health dental clinic * According to Ventura County Health Care Agency’s November 2013 report “Transforming Ventura County Communities” based on 2009 data

Why Does it Matter?

Feb Proclamation by Ventura County Board of Supervisors for Dental Health Awareness Month. Dr. Mark Lisagor and Kathy Long, Supervisor Feb. 5, Ventura County Oral Health Summit meeting

Schools & Child Care Providers: Why is oral health important for your school?  Improved educational performance/participation  Fewer absences = more ADA money for schools  Improved student health, self-esteem and social- emotional development  Pain free children = better students

Schools & Child Care Providers: How Can You Help?  Include oral health education to both children and parents  Own the idea that oral health is part of overall health  Refer children to “Building Healthy Smiles” Dr. Suzanne Berger, Pediatric Dentist, teaches tooth brushing with the help of a friendly shark with lots of teeth.
