BLACK PEOPLE IN THE USA THE JIM CROW LAWS

UNTIL MOST BLACK PEOPLE WERE SLAVES

BLACK PEOPLE HAD NOT CHOSEN TO COME TO THE USA... THEY WERE TAKEN FROM AFRICA AGAINST THEIR WILL! FREE LABOUR FOR PLANTATIONSSLAVES

THE AFRICANS WERE TRANSPORTED IN APPAULING CONDITIONS...

ONCE THEY ARRIVED IN THE USA THEY WERE SOLD AS SLAVES... THEY WERE SOLD TO WORK ON IN THE STATES. PLANTATIONS SOUTHERN

IN 1863 SLAVERY WAS... ABOLISHED

 In 1865 southerners created BLACK CODES to control and limit the freedom of former slaves.  In 1866 the codes were suspended UNFORTUNATELY THE PROBLEMS FOR AFRICAN-AMERICANS DID NOT END THERE...

CHANGES WERE MADE TO THE U.S. CONSTITUTION WHICH GAVE HOPE FOR A BETTER LIFE... Fourteenth Amendment Stated Black people had the right to and be treated by law in the same as White people. Fifteenth Amendment Gave Black American adult males the right to freedom vote

WHAT WERE THESE JIM CROW LAWS?? WHAT DO YOU THINK THE JIM CROW LAWS WERE DESIGNED TO DO? THE JIM CROW LAWS

THE JIM CROW LAWS...  Laws passed by the states between 1877 and the mid-1960s.  The wanted to over the Blacks Southern South keep control

Barbers No colored barber shall serve as a barber [to] white women or girls. Georgia X

Buses All passenger stations in this state operated by any motor transportation company shall have separate waiting rooms or space and separate ticket windows for the white and colored races (Alabama).

Intermarriage All marriages between a white person and a negro, or between a white person and a person of negro descent to the fourth generation inclusive, are hereby forever prohibited. Florida EVEN NOW SOME PEOPLE ARE AGAINST INTERMARRIAGE

JIM CROW “ETIQUETTE” A Black man not allowed to offer to shake hands with a White man or woman. Not meant to eat together. If did Whites to be served first and a screen put between them.

JIM CROW “ETIQUETTE” Blacks had to address Whites formally, while Whites could call Black people by their first names.
