Scientific name: acinonyx jubatus. Size: 30 inches at the shoulder. Weight: 110 to 140 pounds. Lifespan: 10 to 20 years. Habitat: open plains. Diet: smaller antelopes Gestation: 90 to 95 days. Predators: humans, eagles and hyenas.

 Cheetahs are brilliant for hunting in the grasslands of Africa.  Being so fast has advantages for instance they are able catch animals that no other animals can catch.  There are disadvantages because they are sprinters not long distant runners.

 There habitat is the open plains as I mentioned in the fact file.  The open plains are like grasslands so it is easy for the cheetah because they blend in with its surroundings.

 Some cheetahs however live in the deserts and scrublands.  Namibia has the biggest population of cheetahs in Africa  28,000 acres has been set aside for cheetahs.

 The cheetah is the fastest land animal in the world reaching speeds of 113km per hour.  From 0 to the top speed it takes 3 seconds.  Its predators are mainly lions, eagles and hyenas.

 Half the time the lion hunts alone.  One lion can take down an animal twice the size of itself which is very big.  Lions rarely eat where they kill, they take the prey where it cant be seen by predators.

 Even though the lion is called the king of the jungle it does not live in the jungle it lives mainly in open plains and desert.  Lions spend their day lounging under shady trees until they have to hunt in the night.  Lions have brown fur which means they are very inconspicuous in the in the open plains.

There are lots of different species of lion. Here are some of them. The (extinct) The Asiatic lion American lion The cave lion The white lion and the The barbary lion

 Females do 85 to 90 percent of the prides hunting.  Lions are the laziest of the big cats. They spend at least 20 hours a day asleep.  Lions can hunt at any hour but go after big animals at night.

 Lions can go without water for 5 days.  When males take over prides they usually kill the cubs.  In the pride the territorial lion is the father of all cubs.  A lions roar can be heard up to 5 miles away.

 Poachers were always looking for lions and cheetahs for their skin.  They sold the skin from prices up to 1000 euros or pounds.  Now though it has been banned in most countries.
