WHAT IS A CTSO – CAREER & TECHNICAL STUDENT ORGANIZATION? Extracurricular organizations that support student acquisition of leadership skills and career related skills Examples: HOSA-Future Health Professionals JUMP- Junior Upcoming Medical Professionals Skills USA – very broad range of technical career areas DECA – Marketing, Finance, Hospitality, Management FFA – Agriculture Education FPLA – Future Business Leaders of America FCCLA – Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America 11 Organizations that connect with 1 or more of the 16 Career Clusters from the National Career Cluster Network.

WHAT’S SO IMPORTANT ABOUT A CTSO?

HOSA ❖ HOSA is a national student-led organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Education (HSE) Division of ACTE. ❖ HOSA’s two-fold mission is to promote career opportunities in the healthcare industry and to enhance the delivery of quality healthcare to all people. ❖ HOSA provides a unique program of leadership development, motivation, and recognition exclusively for secondary, postsecondary, adult, and collegiate students enrolled in health science education and biomedical science programs or have interests in pursuing careers in health professions. HOSA is 100% health care! ❖ Since its inception in 1976, HOSA has grown steadily reaching over 165,000 members through 48 chartered HOSA State Associations, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Italy and approximately 3,600 secondary and postsecondary/collegiate chapters in ❖ HOSA is not a club to which a few students in school join. It is a powerful instructional tool providing students with training far beyond the basic technical skills needed for entry into the healthcare field. The rapidly changing health care system needs dedicated workers who, in addition to their technical skills, are people-oriented and capable of playing a leadership or followership role as a member of a health care team. HOSA STUDENTS AT CAL-HOSA STATE LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

JUMP Junior Upcoming Medical Professionals HOSA–JUMP is a 7th to 8th grade student led organization designed to be a stepping-stone for students interested in entering the health science and medical technology field. Ideally, JUMP is conducted at middle schools where there is an existing HOSA chapter at the local high school. A partnership between the middle and high school sites is important to both the students and the advisors. HOSA-JUMP members have the opportunity to participate in career exploration through guest speakers, field trips, and middle school-high school mentorship. Through chapter management, including fund-raising and community service, JUMP students learn team-work strategies, leadership values, and positive work ethic. Through the competitive events program, students study various topics for mastery, familiarizing themselves with medical terminology, medical math,public speaking,health care careers and health education.

OUR PROGRAMS: Cathedral City High School ●1900 students ●265 students in HEAL, GRADES 9-12 ●130 students in HOSA Lions Chapter this year Nellie N. Coffman Middle School ●1100 students ●JUMP Chapter started in 2009 ●Focused on 7 th & 8 th graders ●After school, extracurricular group with 2 meetings/month James Workman Middle School ● 1500 students ● JUMP Chapter started 2012 ● Membership has included crossover from Science Club

HIGH SCHOOL-MIDDLE SCHOOL CONNECTIONS Our HOSA Chapter has JUMP Reps, and other HOSA members, who visit the middle school JUMP club meetings once a month o Present Health Education, PSA, Public Health lessons using their own HOSA competitive events projects o Assist JUMP students to prepare their competitive event projects in: Health Careers Display, Medical Terminology, Medical Math and Medical Health Education. o Create ice-breakers and other activities to improve teamwork and leadership skills of JUMP members. o JUMP members get prioritized as applicants for HEAL o JUMP members are ready to participate in and become leaders for our HOSA chapter.

HOW DOES JUMP CLUB WORK? Recruitment ●Parent/Student Orientation Meeting ●PA Announcements ●HOSA members attend recruitment meetings and/or set up tables at middle school events at the beginning of the school year. Officers ●President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary (elected by members) ●2 meetings per month Activities, on their own & with high school HOSA & HEAL ●Year end field trip, attend HOSA activities, Coachella Valley JUMP Competition, Regional JUMP Competition, State JUMP Competition ●Fundraising - Recycling, state grant funds for HEAL help support JUMP

Prior to 2009 there were no JUMP Chapters in the Coachella Valley, currently have 4 ●Nellie N. Coffman, James Workman, Raymond Cree, Indio Middle Schools Valley wide competitions ●First valley competition was in 2012 with only Nellie N. Coffman attending ●Second year, 2013, there were 4 competitive teams ●Third year, 2014, Our Healthcare Industry Partners hosted the event at local Palm Desert campus of UCR for 4 chapters plus 2 visiting middle schools ●CCHS HOSA members assist as judges at the competition ●CCHS HOSA members created the Medical Terminology and Medical Math tests ●Valley HOSA members act as mentors for students in setting up their projects JUMP IN THE COACHELLA VALLEY

Supporting JUMP ●HOSA members from high school health academies act as mentors ●When needed, parents help transport students to competitions ●School site & District administration are dedicated supporters of the program ●PSUSD promotes the HOSA and JUMP programs with support from Linked Learning Plan and CTE programs ●Middle School counselors help direct students towards JUMP as a pathway to achieve their goals and as a stepping stone to health academies ●Industry partners give their time and resources to help students realize health careers

HOSA COMMUNITY AWARENESS TEAM PRESENTS TO JUMP STUDENTS

STATE LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE Cal-HOSA has a State Leadership Conference (SLC) every year for school HOSA Chapters to compete, network and attend workshops. Student competitors advance to attend HOSA National Leadership Conference at varied locations across the U.S. Cal-HOSA location alternates each year between Sacramento and Anaheim California JUMP chapters are included depending on the location of SLC ●Nellie N. Coffman has attended 4 State Leadership Conferences (2010, 2012, 2013, 2014). James Workman has attended 2 (2013, 2014). Raymond Cree has attended 2 (2013, 2014) ●NNC has attended 2 (2013 and 2014) Regional Leadership Conferences ●NNC also attended the opening ceremonies for the National Leadership Conference in 2012 ●SLC in March 2015 is in Sacramento, so our JUMP chapters won’t attend; will hold a Coachella Valley competition instead. ●June 2015-HOSA National Leadership Conference will be in Anaheim, so our valley JUMP chapters will be invited to join us for some part of this incredible event.
