2 Purpose The purpose of the HOSA organization is to develop leadership and technical HOSA skill competencies through a program of motivation, awareness and recognition. This is an integral part of the Health Science Education instructional program. Mission The mission of HOSA is to enhance the delivery of compassionate, quality health care by providing opportunities for knowledge, skill and leadership development of all health science education students. Therefore helping the student meet the needs of the LOCAL and NATIONAL health care community.

3 The Goals of HOSA To promote physical, mental and social well being. To develop effective leadership qualities and skills. To develop the ability to communicate more effectively with people. To develop character. To develop responsible citizenship traits. To understand the importance of pleasing oneself as well as being of service to others. To build self-confidence and pride in one's work. To make realistic career choices and seek successful employment in the health care field. To develop an understanding of the importance in interacting and cooperating with other students and organizations. To encourage individual and group achievement. To develop an understanding of current health care issues, environmental concerns, and survival needs of the community, the nation and the world. To encourage involvement in local, state and national health care and education projects. To support Health Science Education instructional objectives. To promote career opportunities in health care.

4 Why is HOSA Important? HOSA is important because the rapidly changing health care system needs dedicated workers who are people-oriented and capable of playing a leader or follower role as a member of a health care team. HOSA recognizes the importance of providing students with training beyond health specific technical skills required for entry into health care, and plays a unique roll in preparing students for higher education and entry level certification. HOSA, a student lead organization of future health professionals, provides opportunities for students to not only develop, but refine their technical, leadership, and teamwork skills to achieve a seamless transition from education to career.

7 NUMBERS AND DEMOGRAPHICS Registered nurses, home health aides, and personal care aides are among the occupations nationally projected to have the largest job growth between 2010-2020, adding more than 2 million jobs and with another 700,000 job openings due to vacancies from attrition. Examples of ~SELECTED HEALTH CAREERS~ Registered Nurse goes from 495.5 in 2010 to 711.9 in 2020. Home Health Aide goes from 131.2 in 2010 to 706.3 in 2020. Personal Care Aides goes from 68.2 in 2010 to 706.3 in 2020. Nursing Aides, Orderlies & Attendants goes from 194.1 in 2010 to 302 in 2020. Licensed Practical Nurses goes from 200.7 in 2010 to 168.5 in 2020. Physicians &Surgeons goes from 136.8 in 2010 to 168.3 in 2020.

8 New York State HOSA The State Leadership Conference offers members an opportunity to compete in different events related to health careers Participation encourages participants to learn, grow, and become Better Health Professionals Interactions are with students who are planning to enter a health profession and with current Health Professionals

10 National HOSA The highlight of every year for HOSA members is the HOSA National Leadership Conference. The conference is held in June in different cities across the United States.
