SALISBURY Salisbury and Old Sarum

The County of Wiltshire If you are attracted to travel, visit the County of Wiltshire which is located in South West England. The area of Wiltshire was colonized in the pre-Roman period and is exceptionally rich in archeological fragments and antiquities. Don‘t miss Old Sarum, the first settlement of Salisbury and the new city of Salisbury itself. At the edge of Salisbury Plains you will find a remarkable monument, Stonehenge.

Old Sarum was an Iron Age fort built on a hill, close to the trade crossroads and the river Avon. The evidence of settlement comes from BC. Between 43 AD to 410 AD it was an important site of Roman invaders. Old Sarum - the model

The construction of the Royal Residence and the cathedral in Old Sarum started in 1069, just three years after William the Conqueror, the Norman King, won the Battle of Hastings and became the King of England. Old Sarum Castle and Cathedral

The site was exposed to long-lasting conflicts between the clergy and the King‘s military because Old Sarum`s space and access to water were limited. In 1219 the cathedral was pulled down and the stone was used as building material for New Sarum. Old Sarum – the base of the original Cathedral

… in 1220 the first stones were laid for the new Cathedral, just 2 km further down by the hill on the confluence of five rivers. The main church body was finished within 38 years and the church spire is the tallest in the UK. Salisbury Cathedral of St. Mary

…you can see the oldest working clock in the world. The iron clockwork without a dial is dated to Inside the Salisbury Cathedral…

Going along a beautiful ribbed corridor of the Salisbury Cathedral, you will reach the Chapter House where the Magna Carta Liberatum is displayed. The Chapter House and Magna Carta

Magna Carta is the first document in history (issued in 1215) which limits the King‘s powers by law and protects his subject`s privileges. One of four surviving copies is displayed in Salisbury Cathedral, in the Chapter House. Magna Carta Liberatum

The locality for New Sarum, today called Salisbury, was chosen well. Salisbury is an example of a medieval town which was coherently designed on the confluence of five rivers. In 1227, Henry III allowed weekly markets and trade prospered… New Sarum – today Salisbury

…defining an area of different kinds of goods. There were three other market crosses in Salisbury‘s market place: the Cheese cross, the Barnard’s Cross (livestock), and the fourth was to designate a market for wool and yarn. (příze) Poultry Cross is a market cross in the market place…

… stone from Old Sarum was used. Even today, the gate is shut every night. For High Street Gate…

… is one of the interesting houses in Salisbury. This house was designed by Sir Christopher Wren (the architect of St. Paul‘s Cathedral in London) for clergy widows. College of Matrons…

.. are the oldest and best- preserved timber houses in Salisbury, dated from the early 14th century. The addresses: No. 8 and 9 Queen Street…

… is an early fourteen century alehouse. (pivnice) Haunch of Venison …

…display historical and archeological collections from prehistoric times to present day – Stonehenge art, glass and ceramics, costumes and others. Salisbury and the South Wiltshire Museum…

… is 8 miles from Salisbury. The mysterious ring of stones, dated BC, attracts people from all the world round. From the early beginning it was a sacred place and a burial area. Stonehenge, the prehistoric monument of the Iron Ages…

…there are rituals and ceremonies with music and dancing depicting the Celtic and Druid customs of worshiping the Sun and nature. At the time of Summer Solstice…

Two kinds of stone – sarsens and blue stones - were used there. Information about single stones you can get from a panel like that or you can get an audio-guide, where everything is described in detail. The stones…

…the area is roughly commercialized. Either you are queuing for tickets or toilets or the bus… Today…
