3. British Empire The British legal system, language and culture were widespread over all dominions, colonies and other territories. Even after those countries gained independence, the impact of the previous British domination is still evident to this day. If "the empire on which the sun never sets” (1) is mentioned, the British Empire is being spoken about – the largest one in human history. The procedure was finalized by the political transfer of Hong Kong to China in 1997. Many of the former British colonies joined with the newly established British Commonwealth that was officially brought into being in 1931.
