Social Studies/Health Unit Plan for Year 4,5,6 Social Studies/Health “Perseverance” Created by: Catherine Rivers-smith Social Studies/ HPE Achievement Objectives (SS) - Understand how people make choices to meet their goals (needs and wants) 2C1 (HPE) – Identify and demonstrate ways of maintaining and enhancing relationships between individuals and within groups (Arts) – Share ideas, feelings and stories communicated by their own and other’s objects and images NZ Curriculum Values Through their learning experiences students will develop an awareness of what it is to persevere. They will be presented with ideas that will enable them to think about situations they have been in or will possibly face in the future where perseverance is required. Student Needs: Some students in the class are moving on to College next year (Year 7), others in the class will become Year 5 and 6. Perseverance will benefit the students as it will equip them for higher levels of learning and well as greater responsibilities. Key Area(s) of Learning Social Studies Health Art Unit Aim: Students are learning to develop an awareness of the character traits of perseverance. Underlying Concepts Key competencies Language, symbols and texts: Students will communicate their ideas, experiences and information about perseverance, using language, symbols and texts. Thinking & Relating to others: Students will participate in activities that enable them to share ideas, brainstorm, problem solve and provide them with opportunities to persevere with one another. Participating & Contributing: Students will contribute appropriately as an individual and group member and will make connections with others on the topic of perseverance Managing Self: Students will display that they are capable learners, through self-motivation and having a “can do” attitude. Considerations for this group/class Be clear and concise with guidelines and what is expected from students learning. As students are independent learners I will try to let the learning evolve from the students themselves and listen intently to their discussions and responses to know how to scaffold the students learning. Preparation for the unit Gather resources and ideas (borrowed, internet search, library, things from home)
