Pronunciación  When a Spanish word has two vowels side by side, various pronunciation issues come into play: syllable division, diphthongs, and hiatus.  In terms of syllable division, Spanish vowels are divided into two categories: strong vowels (A, E, O) and weak vowels (I, U). To pronounce Spanish correctly, you need to understand strong and weak vowels and how they affect pronunciation.

Pronunciación  Two strong vowels- pronounced as a hiatus (two vowels pronounced as two separate syllables  empl ea do estér eo europ eo imperm ea ble empl ea do estér eo europ eo imperm ea ble

Pronunciación  Two weak vowels- pronounced as a dipthong* with an emphasis on the second vowel.  s ui zo c ui dado s ui zo c ui dado  *Diphthong - Two vowels pronounced as a single syllable. When this happens, the unstressed weak vowel has a special sound: the letter I sounds like Y (as in yet) and U sounds like W (as in will).

Pronunciación  Strong vowel + weak vowel (most common) - pronounced as a dipthong with an emphasis on the strong vowel.  ab ie rto au stral ia no b ai le estud io so f ue rte g ua són ab ie rto au stral ia no b ai le estud io so f ue rte g ua són ingen uo

Pronunciación  Exceptions- When the pronunciation of a word does not follow these rules, an acute accent is placed on the stressed vowel.acute accent  asiático frío jardinería miércoles natación patriótico policía televisión asiático frío jardinería miércoles natación patriótico policía televisión

Pronunciación  Time out- pronunciation activity:  You will receive a piece of paper with a Spanish word on it.  1. Tell the class what type of pronunciation rules the word follows (two weak vowels, strong + weak, etc).  2. Pronounce the word for us.  3. GIVE THE PAPER BACK TO THE TEACHER.
