Purpose When you try to figure out the meaning of a new vocabulary item from the context and to use the item correctly in speaking and writing, it helps to know what part of speech the word is.

A Useful Method: the Suffix Sometimes you can tell the part of speech from the suffix (the ending) on a word.

Here are some common noun suffixes.  Nouns Suffixes : -er, -or, -ist teacher, professor, tourist -sion, -tion discussion, action -ment, -ness enrollment, happiness -ure, -ture pressure, temperature

Some more common noun suffixes.  Nouns Suffixes : -s, -es dogs, buses -ance, -ence distance, difference -ty, -ity ability, availability

Here are some common adjective suffixes. AA djective Suffixes : -ar similar, popular -ic, -al, -ical comic, legal, physical -ful, -less beautiful, careless -ive, -ical expensive, physical

Some more common adjective suffixes. Adjective Suffixes : -er (than) (comparative form) higher, smaller, bigger -ant, -ent distant, different -able, -ible available, responsible

Here are some common adverb suffixes. Adverb Suffixes : -ly clearly, simply, politely -ally scientifically, traditionally
