Presentation transcript:

For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is for children ages 9 to 14. This is an age of rapid physical growth and change as well as shifting emotional moods. The following slides will share some basic facts about the physical, mental, emotional, and social growth of this age group.

For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology Physical Growth  Girls are growing and maturing more rapidly than boys  Coordination increases  Physical appearances begin to change and may make them feel uncomfortable and awkward; voice changes, limb growth, acne, menstrual cycles - all set up situations for potential embarrassment

For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology  During this age group youth move from concrete thinking to more abstract, although still with an all or nothing mindset.  They will deal with things in black-and-white terms. Things will either be right or wrong, fun or boring, cool or uncool. Mental Growth  Will still look to adults for approval. Youth of this age want to know how much they have improved and what they can do better next time. Adult encouragement is important.  Small groups and clubs provide opportunities for developing leadership skills.

For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology Emotional Growth As puberty approaches, young teens’ emotions will fluctuate. Changes in hormones contribute to mood swings and changes in thinking. Early teen years are a time to test value and question authority; adults who are accepting and willing to discuss values and morals have influence with this age group

For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology Social Growth  Social growth during this period is about identifying with their peers and exploring “Who am I?”  Ages 9-11 are about looking up to their peers, imitating others and looking for positive role models  Ages are more focused on getting away from home and seeking social acceptance
