MRPM Tutorial Multi-Radio Power Conservation Management (MRPM)

4 Terminology On/Active: actively running a network application such as transmitting data to or receiving data from the network. Standby: ready to transmit and to receive data at any time. Sleep mode: basically off but wakes up at regular intervals in synchrony with network to transmit and to receive data when needed. Deep sleep mode: intervals between successive wakeups can be much longer. Off: completely off

5 Battery life While engineers may work on power conservation, customers perceive primarily the battery life (between recharges), which depends on how the MN is being used For example, a mobile device may have: Battery life in ON mode: ~ 2 hours Battery life in STANDBY mode: ~ 1 days Battery life in SLEEP mode: ~ 6-7 days Battery life in DEEP SLEEP mode: >> 6-7 days

6 Why MRPM? Each network has own power management for paging and wake, location update, sleep mode protocol, and power saving operations. Each one is performing tasks that consume energy.

15 How often? MN associated with an AP may remain there for hours. Even a 100 km/hr vehicle carrying an MN takes several minutes to traverse a 10 km radius cell.

16 MRPM Multiple radio power conservation management: collaborative efforts from the different networks and the multiple radio interfaces to optimize power conservation in the operations of paging, sleep, wake, and serving BS/AP update. Analogy: car-pool / public transportation. Media independent power conservation management
