Factors for meeting of Chinese and Western cultures(1): Historical factor The signing of Convention of Nanjing The content of Treaty of Beijing (Click to have an enlarged version) Year of signing treaties Main Content 1842 Convention of Nanjing: ceded Hong Kong Island to Britain 1859 Treaty of Beijing: ceded Kowloon Peninsula and Stonecutters Island to Britain 1898 The Convention for the Extension of Hong Kong Territory: the northern part of Kowloon peninsula up to Shenzhen River and other outlying islands in Hong Kong By these treaties, Britain got control of the whole of Hong Kong. Her rule here let Hong Kong people know more about Western ideas.

Factors for meeting of Chinese and Western cultures(2): Social factor Hong Kong Golf Club (established by British in 1898) Hong Kong Jockey Club-- former Hong Kong Royal Jockey Club (established by British in 1846) The Peninsula Hong Kong (established by the Westerners in 1928) After Britain took over Hong Kong, more Westerners came and settled down here. They set up several clubs and hotels for relaxing and accommodating. Local Chinese were then able to learn western recreations and eating style.

Factors for meeting of Chinese and Western cultures(3): Economic factor Low Tax Rates  Hong Kong government has adopted a low tax rate since the mid-19 th century  For this reason, many big foreign companies were attracted to set up branches in Hong Kong and traded with China.  After the WWII, more Chinese were employed by these foreign companies. They became more familiar with the Western social affairs, e.g. dresses, eating, etc. Entrepot trade  After the opening of Suez Canal in 1869, more western enterprises wanted to trade with China. But China’s foreign trade was still limited.  Hong Kong, however, still maintained a good relationship with China. So foreign companies would prefer trading with China through Hong Kong, vice versa.  In this way, Hong Kong people could have contact with both Chinese and Western goods. The view of Victoria Harbour in 1840s A big trading enterprise, Nam Pak Hong In 1920s (Click for an enlarged one)

Conclusion As we are able to maintain our tradition, Chinese culture, and accept Western culture, Hong Kong can grow from a small fishing village into a prosperous and cosmopolitan city. She deserves being hailed as the “Pearl of The Orient”.
