Red Scare HUAC Joseph McCarthy Rosenberg Trial Civil Liberties

Why did we have a Second Red Scare? As the cold war started there was fear of Soviet spies in the United States. In addition, the Soviets created their own atomic bomb in 1949. Americans were afraid that their national security was at risk.

Red Scare During this time many in film, radio and movies were blacklisted. This means that they were put on a list of people not to hire because they were thought to be communists.

HUAC and McCarthy The House Un-American Activities Committee was founded in 1938 to investigate disloyalty and harmful foreign influences in the U.S. but was used extensively after 1947 to find communists. HUAC launched a series of widely publicized hearings targeting Hollywood. In 1950 Senator Joseph McCarthy began a campaign to expose Communists all over the U.S.

Senator Joseph McCarthy

HUAC and McCarthy continued McCarthy created a list of high level U.S. operative who he believed to be Communists. The public was outraged and investigations started. Anyone who challenged McCarthy was looked at as being a Communist or sympathizing with Communists. He attacked dozens of innocent people. He was only stopped when he accused the military of housing Communists

Rosenberg Trial Ethel and Julius Rosenberg were American communists who were convicted of sending American Nuclear secrets to the Soviets They were both executed. This caused a huge stir in America because may believed they were unfairly punished because of the hysteria of the Red Scare
