Senator who claimed that there were 205 known Communists working for the U.S. Dept of State
Claims were rarely backed up with evidence
McCarthy simmered down after making accusations within the military and being reigned in by the Senate.

11. Red Scare Paranoia
In the 1950s there was such worry over the use of atomic bombs, that some Americans bought nuclear fallout bunkers: small homes built underground to live in during a “nuclear winter”

The Hollywood Ten (writers and directors) refused to answer HUAC questions about their beliefs or those of their colleagues
Many others in Hollywood did testify, for if they didn’t their names were placed on a blacklist

Alger Hiss: convicted of being a spy for the Soviets; sentenced to prison
Klaus Fuchs: Manhattan Project scientist who gave atomic bomb info to the Soviets; served 9 years in prison
Ethel and Julius Rosenberg: convicted of passing secrets to the Soviets and executed

3. On June 25, 1950 North Korea invaded South Korea, quickly taking much of their territory
3. By July of 1950 the US and the UN entered the war to stop the spread of communism.

23. General Douglas MacArthur
General in the American Army and was given control of Japan after World War II.
He led the United States armed forces into Korea.
4. Would later be removed from duty after disagreements between him and President Eisenhower about use of Nuclear weapons.

24. End of Korean War
After the initial victories by the North Koreans, MacArthur’s forces pushed them back to China
After disagreements on what to do next, MacArthur was removed and forces were pushed back to original borders
5. Fighting continued for 3 more years with little to no ground being made.
On July 27, 1953 both sides agreed to a cease-fire
