3 America’s Reaction to the growth of Communism
Soviet Union has Atomic Weapons September 1949 Truman announced that the Soviet Union had detonated an atomic bomb. Truman began to strengthen the nation’s military against a possible Soviet nuclear threat. Spread of Communism in Eastern Europe Communist groups in the U.S. growing

Brinkmanship: practice of pushing dangerous events to the brink of disaster in order to achieve the most advantageous outcome. Mutually Assured Destruction: strategy which involves two countries using weapons of mass destruction, assuring inevitable destruction for both sides and victory for none. Nuclear Arms Race: Both the U.S. and Soviet Union were building up their weapons in large numbers-

7 Dot Game Each person draws a card
Do not tell anyone what color dot you‘ve drawn. Goal is to form largest group without any Red Dots Goal for Red Dots is to become a member of largest group possible If you suspect anyone of being a Red Dot, share that information with others. You are rewarded if… You are a part of the largest group without any Red Dots You are a lone Red Dot to infiltrate a group. Teacher – prepare a class set of notecards. Each has a different colored dot on one side. Only a few of the dots should be red.

The House of Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) investigated the full range of radical groups in the United States, including Communists

10 Joseph McCarthy and McCarthyism
Senator who claimed that there were 205 known Communists working for the U.S. Dept of State Claims were rarely backed up with evidence McCarthy simmered down after making accusations within the military and being reigned in by the Senate.

11 Red Scare Paranoia In the 1950s there was such worry over the use of atomic bombs, that some Americans bought nuclear fallout bunkers: small homes built underground to live in during a “nuclear winter”

The Hollywood Ten (writers and directors) refused to answer HUAC questions about their beliefs or those of their colleagues Many others in Hollywood did testify, for if they didn’t their names were placed on a blacklist

14 Actual Spies? Alger Hiss: convicted of being a spy for the Soviets; sentenced to prison Klaus Fuchs: Manhattan Project scientist who gave atomic bomb info to the Soviets; served 9 years in prison Ethel and Julius Rosenberg: convicted of passing secrets to the Soviets and executed

21 The Korean War Containing Communism

22 Start of the Korean War 1. North Korean 2. South Koreans
Backed by Soviets and Chinese Communists 2. South Koreans Backed by Americans 3. On June 25, 1950 North Korea invaded South Korea, quickly taking much of their territory 3. By July of 1950 the US and the UN entered the war to stop the spread of communism.

23 General Douglas MacArthur
General in the American Army and was given control of Japan after World War II. He led the United States armed forces into Korea. 4. Would later be removed from duty after disagreements between him and President Eisenhower about use of Nuclear weapons.

24 End of Korean War After the initial victories by the North Koreans, MacArthur’s forces pushed them back to China After disagreements on what to do next, MacArthur was removed and forces were pushed back to original borders 5. Fighting continued for 3 more years with little to no ground being made. On July 27, 1953 both sides agreed to a cease-fire Line drawn on the 38th parallel
