KILLER WHALES: One of the ocean’s top predators. An Internet Search Tutorial for Miss Tolley’s Kindergarteners.

What does that mean? Before we search on the internet we are going to go over a few vocabulary words that you need to know!

Address bar This is the white box at the top of the page. It is where you type in the web address.

Keyword A keyword is an important word or a few important words that describe the topic you want to learn about. You type this word into a search engine.

Search Engine A search engine is a special kind of website. If you type your keyword into a search engine, it will look around and find websites that might be helpful. – – –

Web Address Every website has a special address just like you! They usually start with and they end with.com,.edu, or.org. – – –

Ready to learn? Since you have learned some new vocabulary words to help you search on the internet, we are going to go to the internet and learn all about Killer Whales! Here we go!

Step One Double click on the Internet Explorer icon. It looks like this:

Step Two Find the Address Bar and click inside of it. The web address will turn blue.

Step Three Put a new web address in the address bar. The address that we are going to use is:

Step Five 1.Find the search bar at the top of the page. 2.Type national geographic kids and click on

There will be many different choices to choose from on the following page. We are going to choose just one of them.

Step Six We are going to click on the second choice in the list. The one that says “National Geographic Kids”

Step Seven The National Geographic Kids website will open up. This is a very neat website!

Step Eight Click on the link. It is located here:

Step Nine Scroll down the page to using the scroll bar on the right-hand side of the screen. It looks like this:

Step Ten Scroll down until you see the animals menu. It looks like this:

Step Eleven 1.We want to learn about the Killer Whale. So, we will need to scroll through the animals by pushing on one of the arrows at either side of the menu. 2.Search through the animals until you find the picture that looks like this: 3.Click on it!

Step Twelve A page will open up that looks like this

Step Thirteen The teacher will read you the information (from page one to page eight) in the white box on the screen. Be sure to listen carefully! We want to learn as much as we can about these amazing animals! We will have questions to answer when we are done!

Question and Answer Time! 1.What is another name for a Killer Whale? A.Orca 2.What do Killer Whales do to the seals to get them in the water so that they can eat them? A.Bump them off the ice 3.How many pounds of food do they eat a day? A Killer Whales are often called wolves of the sea because they hunt in what? A.Groups or Families 5.Killer Whales do not chew their food. What do they do with it? A.Swallow it whole 6.Why are their backs black and stomachs white? How does this help them hunt? A.So that animals looking down into the water can’t see them because they blend in with the bottom of the ocean, and so that animals looking up to the top of the water can’t see them because they blend in with the top of the ocean. Animals can’t see them so they can catch their prey off guard. 7.What different things do Killer Whales eat? A.Seals, other whales, sharks, fish, penguins, squid, sea lions, sea turtles, etc.

Let’s have some fun! The teacher is going to give you a dot-to-dot to do on your own. Remember to count as you go from one number to the next so that you do not mess up your drawing!
