A web browser is used to access the World Wide Web. Some examples of different web browsers are: Chrome Firefox Safari Internet Explorer

This is the Address Bar, that shows the web address (or URL).
To go to a different web page, type in the web address and press Enter.
These are the Navigation Buttons.
You can go back to a web page you were just viewing and then forward to the web page you were on before.

Press the home button to bring you to your home page

10. Refresh Button
Refresh button: tells the internet browser to reload the webpage. It is useful when a webpage does not work properly
**Be careful using the refresh button when you are completing an online application. It may cause the information that you already entered to disappear!
Do not use the refresh or navigation buttons when ordering something online, it could make you order and pay for the item more than once!

15. Using Tabs
To open a link in a new tab, right click on the link and then select Open in a new tab.
To close a tab, hover your mouse over the tab and click on the X that appears in the right hand corner.

To open a new tab in the Internet Explorer window click on the transparent square to the right of the current open tab(s). This will open a blank tab.
*Be sure not to have too many tabs open at one time! This can slow down and freeze your browser.

18. Pop Up Windows
Websites may have pop-up windows that are blocked by a browser’s safety features. The browser will usually tell you if it is blocking a pop up window. It will also give you the option to allow pop up windows for that site.

Search engines are specialized websites that help you find what you are looking for on the internet. There are many search engines, but the most popular are: Google Bing Yahoo We will be using Google today.

This is the Google search page. Questions and search topics should be entered into the search box. Remember, the more specific you are, the better results you will get.

22. Hyperlink
You can also go to another webpage by clicking on a Hyperlink or Link. Links can be words, objects or pictures. Text links are typically blue and underlined, like this. To determine whether or not something is a link, hover your mouse over the hyperlink. If the curser becomes hand-shaped, a hyperlink is present.

Google also has ads, typically on the top and right. It is best to click on the results and ignore the ads.

As you type in the search box, Google will give you suggestions. These suggestions are usually helpful and may suggest something you had not thought of.

Placing quotes around a phrase indicates to Google that results must include the entire phrase, rather than the single words.
e.g.: “crock pot recipes”
Put a hyphen symbol in front of a word to exclude search results containing that word.
e.g.: crock pot recipes -chicken
Use OR to include results for either of two search words.
e.g.: crock pot recipes beef OR turkey

There is also a link to Gmail, if you have a Google account, and Maps, which is useful for finding directions to new destinations.

27. Understanding a Webpage
When reading a webpage, the main content is typically the only relevant piece of the page. The main content is surrounded by advertisements, links to other articles, etc.

Often, you will want to print off information that you find online. Many websites will have a link for you to print the article. These links often lead to preview page. This page shows how the information will appear when printed. A Print link is also present; this will send the document to the printer.

Select the gear icon in the top right hand corner, select print and then select print preview.
It is important to preview anything you print to avoid unnecessary pages and insure that the desired information is printing.

In the left hand column you can refine your search. Sort jobs by date, change the distance to 10 miles, and select full-time only.
Scroll down the page and select a job that looks interesting (make sure you open it in a new tab).
