JAMESTOWN SURVIVED BECAUSE… TOBACCO – John Rolfe learned to grow a less bitter kind, giving them a profitable crop.

BURGESSES - Elected assembly to make laws for the colony

As the colony grew, their walls expanded

Excavation at the original site is still occurring today!

Pocahontas Agonquin Indian Powhatan Tribe This is an original engraving by Simon van de Passe, from which an oil painting was later made. This is the only surviving portrait made during her lifetime, published in 1616. Therefore, it is the most accurate.

Pocahontas Father was Chief Powhatan Saved John Smith? This picture shows the original engraving enhanced with color.

Pocahontas -Converts to Christianity (Rebecca) This painting is a later copy of an engraving made during her London visit of 1616. It flatters and Europeanizes her more than does the original engraving, which failed to capture her celebrated allure.

Pocahontas Married John Rolfe Some say this painting of Pocahontas and her son Thomas, which has been preserved for centuries, is the most accurate depiction of her.

Pocahontas -Visits Europe (Big Deal) - Develops Pneumonia on the trip back America has viewed Pocahontas more like this photo of O’Orianka Kilcher who played her in the 2005 movie “The New World”.

Pocahontas - Dies at 22 (1617) “Tis enough that the child liveth” Then Disney gets a hold of a character and really distorts reality to try and sell action figures!
