INTRODUCTION TO BIOPROCESS ENGINEERING PROGRAM

What is Bioprocess Engineering Program?

What is Bioprocess Engineering Program? is a specialization of biological processes and Biotechnology in Chemical Engineering field. It deals with the design and development of equipment and processes for the manufacturing of bio-based products such as food, feed, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, chemicals, polymers, and etc, from biological materials. Is also a conglomerate of mathematics, biology and chemical design, and consists of various spectrums like studying of fermentors (mode of operations etc.), large scale production of biological product, optimization of yield in the end-product and the quality of end-product and microorganism cellular-based productions. is a chemical engineering discipline associated with the production of biological related entities such as design and operation of fermentation systems, biopharmaceuticals, biofuels, development of food processing systems, application and testing of product separation technologies, design of instrumentation to monitor and control biological processes, and many more.

What is Bioprocess Engineering Program? What separates you from other engineers?  the understanding of how every engineering field relates to living systems.  With the rapid growth of biologically based technologies, bioprocess engineers are uniquely qualified to solve the problems of today and tomorrow (ex: green technology).   They provide a bridge between the research laboratory activities and the economics, and large-scale commercial implementation of biotechnologies.  “You know the chemical process, and of course you know the biological process”

What Bioprocess Engineers do? “Production of dairy based product, ex: Cheese, yogurt, cultured milk, etc” A Bioprocess Engineer should be able to solve/ do the following problems / tasks: Upstream: microorganisms, bioreactors, control environment, growth kinetics, reactions, production, fermentation process, etc. Downstream: Separation of cells, biomass, impurities to obtain purified products.
