International Workshop on Coral Reef Monitoring Data Management WorldFish Center (Penang, Malaysia). December 2 – Organized by: WorldFish Center - Ministry of Environment (Japan) - GCRMN Coral Reef Monitoring: Data coordination and collaboration Jamie Oliver

International Workshop on Coral Reef Monitoring Data Management WorldFish Center (Penang, Malaysia). December 2 –  32 participants  15 countries  8 coral reef regions  23 coral reef monitoring programs  emphasis on SE Asian region Global Participation

International Workshop on Coral Reef Monitoring Data Management WorldFish Center (Penang, Malaysia). December 2 – Workshop Structure Day 1: Presentations overview of who is doing what in each region and major program Day 2: Discussions What should we be doing with the monitoring data in order to summarize and present it most effectively? Day 3: Discussions How should database systems be structured to share data What help is needed by other programs to develop database and data analysis tools What formal collaborations would be useful in achieving better collaboration and funding for new initiatives

International Workshop on Coral Reef Monitoring Data Management WorldFish Center (Penang, Malaysia). December 2 – GCRMN Global Status Reports Good Progress, but… Little consistency in presentation Most countries do not show trends in major reef groups No overall summary indicators of reef status per country or region

International Workshop on Coral Reef Monitoring Data Management WorldFish Center (Penang, Malaysia). December 2 – Established Coral Monitoring Database systems with online presence  GBR: AIMS LTMP  Hawaii: CRAMP  Caribbean: CARICOMP; AGRRA  South Asia: GCRMN SA Database  Southern Indian Ocean: COREMO  Indonesia: COREMAP/CRITIC  Philippines: MIDAS/PhilReefs  Global: ReefCheck; ReefBase

International Workshop on Coral Reef Monitoring Data Management WorldFish Center (Penang, Malaysia). December 2 – Advantages of Compatibility in databases and variables  Data can be compared between countries and regions  Regional trans-boundary issues can be monitored by different countries but analysed as a single data set  Common data structures allow a generic database to be built which could be adopted and adapted by new programs with limited resources  Training on database systems and data analysis for coral reef monitoring could be developed centrally and provided cheaply to GCRMN members

International Workshop on Coral Reef Monitoring Data Management WorldFish Center (Penang, Malaysia). December 2 – Outcomes of this workshop  Greater awareness of other monitoring program databases  Ideas on how to develop common summary databases and data presentations for status reporting  Ideas on how to more effectively share data and what tools are needed to do this  Agreement on the need to collaborate (formally and/or informally) in developing database systems and tools  Start of a network of database systems

International Workshop on Coral Reef Monitoring Data Management WorldFish Center (Penang, Malaysia). December 2 – Outputs  A comprehensive list of all major coral reef database systems and input/analysis tools  An outline for a standard national status report  A draft list of common variables and measurement units for summary reporting and comparisons (including core and optional elements)  A draft list of common data structures (tables, fields) to hold this summary data  A list of user needs for countries and organizations wishing to develop better monitoring data management capacity  A list of organizations with capacity to assist the in delivering the above  A list of potential collaborative projects which could be developed for submission to funding bodies  A timetable for producing outputs for the Okinawa ICRS
