A Mighty Woman with a Torch: The Statue of Liberty Unveiled in 1886

President Cleveland dedicated the Statue of Liberty on Oct. 28, 1886.

She is located in the New York Harbor on Ellis Island.

She greeted thousands of immigrants and visitors as they entered New York Bay and arrived into the United States.

The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of freedom known throughout the world. She used to be called the “Liberty Enlightening the World.” Today, some people call her Lady Liberty.

She is made of hammered copper sheets. Overtime, the acidic rain has turned the copper sheets into a rusty greenish color.

Lady Liberty is 151 feet tall. She stands upon a concrete-and-granite pedestal. With the base and pedestal, she stands a total of 305 feet.

The statue of liberty is a woman escaping the chains of tyranny, which lie at her feet. Her right hand holds a burning torch that represents liberty.

She wears a crown with seven rays. These rays represent the seven seas and continents of the world.

Her left hand holds a tablet inscribed with the date July 4, 1776 (in Roman numerals). This is the day the United States declared its independence. We call it Fourth of July!

“Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” The Statue of Liberty’s freedom message is this:
