The New Colossus The New Colossus – Emma Lazarus Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, With conquering limbs astride from land to land; Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon -hand Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame. "Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp !" cries she With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest -tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" A sonnet – poem in 14 lines, stanzas of 8 and 6 in a set rhyme scheme

The Poem Sonnet (Petrarchan sonnet, to be precise) - 14 lines total-- one section of 8 rhyming lines A B A rhyme pattern

One section of 6 lines C D C D C D rhyme pattern

Rewritten/explicated first stanza Not like that arrogant stuck up Colossus of Rhodes That stood dominating the harbor. Here on the beautiful east coast of the US There will stand this powerful female statue holding a torch That stands for power and we will call her Mother of all those kicked out of their homelands. From that light A feeling of welcome and safety will flow Over the harbor that has a city on either side of it

Now, it’s your turn: "Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
