Liberty Enlightening the World The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States and is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, designated as a National Monument in 1924 and restored for her centennial on July 4, 1986. Next Slide?

A poem is inscribed at the base of the statue with an important message for both immigrants and US citizens. Can you make sense of this quote… “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore; send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” What does it mean to you? With the growing threat of terrorism and illegal immigration, should limits be placed on how many immigrants may come to the US? Will a day ever come where no new immigrants will be admitted into the country? Do you agree with this? Discuss… A Symbol? Next Slide?
