From 1:00 – 1:59  Any time you say 1:00, am or pm, you use: …es la una (+ y + minutes) Write the following times, in Spanish, in your notebooks!

As you know, there are other ways to say time. Instead of saying the minutes, we can change it to say “quarter of an hour” or “half an hour.” However, after half an hour, you will just use the minutes.  Quarter of an hour, or 15 minutes = “y cuarto” Example: Son las diez y cuarto.  Half an hour, or 30 minutes = “y media” Example: Son las diez y media.

As you know, there are other ways to say time. Instead of saying the minutes, we can change it to say “quarter of an hour” or “half an hour.” However, after half an hour, you will just use the minutes. **Quarter of an hour, or 15 minutes = “y cuarto” Example: Son las diez y cuarto. **Half an hour, or 30 minutes = “y media” Example: Son las diez y media. Write the following times, in Spanish, in your notebooks!

 We can be more specific about time when we use the following vocabulary: › De la mañana › De la tarde › De la noche › En punto **NOTE: You use the previous phrases only when associated specifically with time.  Just like in English, we can replace the numbers with specific words: › Mediodía (noon) › Medianoche (midnight)  Example: Es la medianoche. Es el mediodía.

Telling what time something will happen

When we talk about an event, and want to say what time it will occur we use ‘a’. The ‘a’ will replace ‘son las’ or ‘es la’ because you will be using another verb instead. The following are examples:  Example: It’s 6:16. Son las seis y dieciséis. She eats at 6:16. Ella come a las seis y dieciséis.  Example: Class starts at 11:50. La clase empieza a las once y cincuenta.

When we ask what time an event take place, we say, “¿A qué hora…?” As you can see, the ‘a’ is pulled into the question, and is used in the response. The following are examples.  Example: At what time does the Spanish class start? ¿ A qué hora empieza la clase de español? The Spanish class starts at 8:00am. La clase de español empieza a las ocho de la mañana.  Example: The movie is at 5:00. La película es a las cinco.

Turn to a partner, and ask, “¿A qué hora es la película?” (At) what time is the movie? Response: (name of movie) es a la/las…

Answer the following questions in your notebook:  ¿A qué hora te despiertas? (What time do you wake up?)  ¿A qué hora es tu primera clase? (What time is your first class?)  ¿A qué hora llegas a casa? (What time do you go home?)  ¿A qué hora cenas? (What time do you eat dinner?)  ¿A qué hora te acuestas? (What time do you go to bed?)  ¿A qué hora haces la tarea? (What time do you do your homework?)  ¿A qué hora almuerzas el fin de semana? (What time do you eat lunch on the weekend?)
