Description and Character

Bell Ringer In your notebook, draw a detailed map of your neighborhood. Label what you consider to be important landmarks. Await further instruction.

Summer Reading In class essay. Hand written. You will choose from multiple questions. Prove that you read it. I’m not out to punish you. Counts as a major paper. Punctuation counts.

Workshop You will workshop your writing with small groups. If you are willing, you may submit your draft to be workshopped by the class. Only constructive.

Bell Ringer Mark with a number (1-5) five places on your map that can be accompanied by a good story.

Bell Ringer 1.Find a person sitting near you. 2.Shake his or her hand and introduce yourself. 3.Exchange maps 4.Discuss maps. Translate art when necessary. 5.At the bottom, write the number of the location about which you’d like to hear the accompanying story. 6.Hand maps back to owners.

Write what you know… Create a bubble organizer with your location in the center. Get your detail on. Be VERY specific. Think about your five senses.

Bell Ringer Which of the below sentences is incorrectly punctuated? Write the incorrect sentence in your Bell Ringer section and correct it. Also, write why it is incorrect. Fred went to Wal-Mart. He bought a door jam. Fred went to Wal-Mart, and he bought a door jam. Fred went to Wal-Mart; and bought a door jam. Fred went to Wal-Mart; he bought a door jam.

Creating a Character

??? Are they not all ducks?

Your job, as a writer, is to introduce a character in a way that: 1. is interesting 2. brings them to life for the reader 3. conjures up an image that is as close as possible to the way you see them in your mind 4. gives the reader more information than just their physical appearance - i.e. also gives an insight into their personality and what drives them. (McCalister 12)

Balance Public Persona Private Persona

“The characters contain the human element, that element of human destiny, for the reader to identify with” (Fletcher 56). How does a writer do that?

Bell Ringer Which of the following is an incorrect use of a comma? Please explain why. My friend, Frank, is cool. Frank, my friend, is cool. Frank, the cool guy, is my friend. My friend, Frank is cool.

Description Exercise! Rules: 1.Describe the object and anything around it. 2.Do not tell us what it is. You may describe parts, but not the object. 3.Explain the atmosphere. What is happening around it? How did it get there? Create an entire story if you’d like. Anything is fine. 4.Google Image the word “object” to choose your model. Save the picture in a googledoc. 5.Get started. 6.Keep it appropriate 7.Be ready to share.
