History

Who can be a mentor? Anyone! It depends…

“Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction.” John C. Crosby So, again… Who can be a mentor?

Choosing my Mentor Be clear on why you want a mentor. Define your personality and communication style. Explain why you’re asking and what you’d expect. Choose a mentor you truly respect. Ask for input on a single specific topic. Look for ways you can reciprocate. Show gratitude. Think beyond former bosses and professors. Mentoring can take many forms. This is your path, not theirs. Don’t become too dependent on your mentor. Have more than one mentor. Good mentors are very busy people.

Who can be a mentee? The best mentees are those who: Want to proactively advance in their careers Want to proactively look at their strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for improvement Are willing to share their mistakes and failures in order to learn from them Are willing to listen to the advice of others and act upon it Can be honest with themselves and introspective Have the ability to hold themselves accountable and be self-disciplined Are open to new ideas and opinions Have a good sense of humor with the ability to take situations seriously but be able to laugh at themselves

"If you don't like something change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude. Don't complain." Maya Angelou

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. Chinese proverb Do not wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person. Mother Teresa
