Proposals to Deliver Planned Care at Cannock Chase Hospital

What we will cover Overview of the current position and why we need to change Planned Care at Cannock Chase Hospital – our proposal Proposed timeline for specialty transfer

How things are now An increasing demand on inpatient beds at New Cross Continuing uncertainty for patients arising from: Delays in admission from the Emergency Department Moves between wards Delays in discharge Cancellation of operations Delays in having your operation, once you’re admitted And, sometimes we don’t get it right leading to poor care and experience An opportunity to change how services are delivered when RWT acquires Cannock Chase Hospital

How we developed proposals Senior doctors at RWT have led the process We have listened to patients either formally and informally We have looked at clinical models that work well in other parts of the country and abroad Using Cannock Chase Hospital to benefit the patients of Wolverhampton

Our proposals We are proposing to provide the following care at Cannock Chase Hospital: Day Case Surgery Day Case Medicine Planned Inpatient Surgery

We propose to provide day case surgery for the specialties shown in the table below. Appointments, including pre-operative assessment will be offered at the hospital closest to the patient (or their choice) Specialty Available at New Cross as well? General Surgery (examples of this include hernia repair and gall bladder surgery) Yes Orthopaedics (includes shoulder, hands, foot & ankle surgery) Yes Breast SurgeryYes Urology (includes bladder and kidney)Yes Dermatology/plastic surgery (removal of lumps and lesions)Yes Day Case Surgery Adults only

We plan to provide day case investigations and treatments for the medical specialties shown in the table below: Day Case Medicine Adults only SpecialtyExample of proceduresAvailable at New Cross as well? EndoscopyColonoscopy, gastroscopy, sigmoidoscopy Yes RheumatologyDay care and intravenous treatments for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis Yes - Complex patients only DermatologyPhototherapy, intensive topical skin treatments Yes - Complex patients only

We plan to provide planned inpatient surgery for the specialties shown in the table below. Preoperative assessment will be offered at the hospital closest to the patient (or their choice) and all patients at Cannock will be assessed to ensure they are not complex. Planned Inpatient Surgery Adults only SpecialtyAvailable at New Cross as well? General Surgery (examples of this include hernia repair and gall bladder surgery) Yes - Complex patients only Orthopaedics (includes hip, knee, foot & ankle and upper limb surgery) Yes - Complex patients only Breast SurgeryYes - Complex patients only Urology (includes bladder and kidney)Yes - Complex patients only Dermatology/plastic surgery (surgery on the skin)Yes - Complex patients only

Proposed timescales

How many patients will be affected? The table below shows the approximate number of patients who would receive care and treatment at Cannock Chase Hospital. All patients who are treated at Cannock will have to meet the clinical criteria for surgery. Total Activity at New Cross 2013/14 Proposed Transfer to Cannock Remaining activity at New Cross % proposed to transfer A&E attendances Inpatient/Daycase Unplanned admissions Outpatient attendances (including procedures)

Creating the right environment to deliver services It is important to us that the clinical environment meets the same standards as that in the rest of RWT. As part of the transfer of services from MSFT, RWT has been able to get some funding from the Department of Health to refurbish and remodel the facilities at Cannock Chase Hospital including: Building a new Endoscopy Unit Creating a Musculoskeletal Unit for rheumatology patients Refurbishing the inpatient and day case Wards Refurbishing the outpatient areas Building some new theatres

What are the benefits? More certainty over the date of your procedure A better experience for all patients Improved quality of clinical services and health outcomes Keeping local services safe - a clinically and operationally sustainable service model Treatment in an improved environment More effective use of public resources

Your views This is your chance to tell us your hopes or concerns about the proposals we have explained this evening. Table discussion & questions 20 minutes Tell us how concerned/unconcerned you are about our proposals, telling us your reasons why If you have any questions, note them on the feedback slips so we can answer them at the end

Thank you.
