Classroom management

Briefly describe what you think ‘classroom management’ means? Can you give any examples of current practice?

Classroom management is everything that a teacher does that doesn’t involve teaching and learning Planned groupings, instructions, class rules are all examples of classroom management

controlcontract agreement rewards authoritarian routine smooth power rules responsibility punishment behaviour cooperationauthoritative Choose 3 that are closest to what you think classroom management means

Learning is taking place The lesson is well-planned It is quiet The teacher is in control The teacher and pupils are cooperating smoothly The pupils understand the objectives The teacher is naturally authoritative Pupils are motivated How much does classroom management effect these:

Teacher BehaviourAppropriate situations The teacher shouts The teacher is at the back of the class The teacher is at the front of the class The teacher is sitting at a pupil’s table

Which are the most effective / least effective ways of getting control of a noisy class? The teacher blows a whistle The teacher claps their hands The teacher puts their hand up and waits for the pupils to copy The teacher shouts at the pupils to be quiet The teacher stands on a table and shouts at the pupils to be quiet The teacher speaks quietly and hopes that the pupils will stop talking and listen The teacher stands in front of the class with their arms crossed, staring at the class

Do you agree or disagree with the following statements? Why / Why not? Classes where the pupils sit in straight rows are easier to control Classes where pupils sit in straight rows are old- fashioned and stop pupils learning Having pupils in straight rows is the easiest way to teach a large class It is important for pupils to face the teacher Pupils participate more in classes where they sit in straight rows Pupils understand more in classes where they sit in straight rows
