Parenting Classes Provided by Appoquinimink School District School Counselors

ASD Parenting Classes Classes are typically offered in the fall and spring Taught by school counselors 2 Programs: STEP: Systematic Training for Effective Parenting Love & Logic Typical participation is 10 parents/guardians

ASD Parenting Classes 6 sessions – run for 2 hours each session Babysitting is provided Snacks All materials are provided Pre & Post Survey

STEP: Program Basics Teaches how to communicate effectively with children. Teaches goals of misbehavior and how to foster positive goals. Teaches how to gain cooperation from children. Teaches how to use encouragement and to discipline with firmness and kindness.

Great ideas to try and lots of opportunities for discussion about specific situations.

Instead of nagging during the morning, getting ready for school. I just said “Here is 15 minutes to get ready and then you go to school as is.” It worked!

I like the fact that I don’t have to respond right away to an incident – I can say “I will respond to this later.”

I learned to allow my child to think for himself and find a solution to his own problem.

The class discussion was extremely valuable as was the instructor’s knowledge.

Getting the support from other parents

Excellent instruction on how to positively and effectively re-tool my interactions with my children

Show empathy and stay calm. I have seen that if I stay calm, my children are more apt to stay calm.
