SERENATE Meeting, September 17-18, What I really want from networks NOW, and in 5-10 years time The educationalist’s view Managing director, professor Dorte Olesen, UNIC (Danish IT-centre for education and research)

SERENATE Meeting, September 17-18, Briefly about UNIC  UNIC is a nationwide government institution under the Danish Ministry of Education.  UNIC has approx. 300 employees and has offices in Copenhagen, Lyngby and Aarhus.  In 2001 UNIC’s turnover was approx. DKK 355 million.

SERENATE Meeting, September 17-18, UNIC’s aim is to develop and provide information technological services primarily within education and research, and to;  ensure development and provision of adapted and financially sound services in the IT system areas under the Ministry of Education, comprising access to central databases, and support to the ministry and its schools and other educational institutions.  ensure provision of international IT services for Danish educational and research institutions.

SERENATE Meeting, September 17-18,  support network co-operation and network agreements internationally and nationally with regard to the access for research institutions to the basic network, including high-speed network according to requirement, and  provide support in relation to the implementation of new initiatives in the IT area in the Ministry of Education.

SERENATE Meeting, September 17-18, International co-operation UNI  C has a broad international surface of contact  via several years in international organizations: NORDUnet, Ebone, EARN, TERENA, EUN  via participation in a large number of EU projects, especially in the areas of: High-speed networks, multimedia, information search and distance education  via collaboration with other countries (e.g. Norway) on pedagogical ICT training for teachers

SERENATE Meeting, September 17-18, In education, the network used to be  a supplement, a spice, a gimmick  providing varying bandwidth  a place where you had to develop your own services on top of the network (mail distribution lists, web-based educational material etc.)  a security hazard

SERENATE Meeting, September 17-18, To be truly integrated in education, a network is needed that  is never down  has surplus bandwidth (just enough is not enough)  has QoS if the bandwidth is limited  has a QoS that prioritises educational use (never seen yet!)  has a solution for all security issues  provides all the services needed by teachers, pupils and other relevant parties (parents, apprentice masters, producers of educational material etc.)

SERENATE Meeting, September 17-18, Security:  identification and single sign on  no anonymous users  logging, Intrusion detection and surveillance  firewall protection of everyone  filtering porn, spam and viruses  an incident response capability (CERT)  courses for end users on security issues

SERENATE Meeting, September 17-18, Services:  identification and single sign on (this is also a userfriendlyness issue)  communication and conferencing facilities  e-learning platform  video, tele-immersion and other real-time communication services  services providing background material (databases, radio & TV archives, migration statistics day-byday)

SERENATE Meeting, September 17-18, But first and foremost - we want it now!
