EARNEST Other Users Study Karel Vietsch – Sabine Jaume-Rajaonia

Other Users? Schools : report written by Andrew Perry ( UK Ministry for Education, and on secondment at UNIC) Health : Martin Bech, Henrik Soendergaard, (UNIC), Christina Wanscher (MedCom DK) Arts Humanities Social Sciences : report written by Catalin Meirosu (TERENA) and Sabine Jaume-Rajaonia (RENATER)

Findings: Schools 1/2 Based on literature, NREN interviews and practitioners European workshop held in Feb in Paris  Focused on usage Connectivity : 3 scenarii –Via the NREN –Via a dedicated schools network –Via a commercial ISP Average of 96% of schools access to the Internet in Europe Importance of political factors (incl. e-Europe) Schools’ needs : –Reliable infrastructure –Training

What do they use the network for : –Included in the curriculum –Own website and mail –Interactive whiteboards –Learning platforms –Video conferencing –Resource portals Barriers to development of these uses : –Lack of money to purchase reliable infrastructure –Low bandwidth –Not all PCs have connectivity Findings: Schools 2/2

Based on literature, web searches for 18 countries and face-to-face discussions Provides an introduction to the health sector and an overview of the status of health data networking in several European countries, and offers an outline regarding the considerations a typical NREN must make when expanding into health research and the healthcare sector. Findings: Health 1/3

Findings: Health 2/3 Most health data networks in Europe are mainly regional, few national NRENs are generally not involved in healthcare (exceptions are the Scandinavian and Baltic countries, the UK and Serbia where NRENs are involved in a few projects) The healthcare sector = political and legislative constraints. The sector is applications driven, but with a large number of applications and low level of interoperability Emerging applications require significant bandwidth (telediagnostics, remote radiology etc). The pharmaceutical industry and clinical research organisations use closed, leased networks and have relatively little demand for high- speed connections but are very demanding regarding the service level agreements and guarantees offered by their contractors.

Health and NRENs : pros and cons 3/3 Pros : –Excellent international high-speed connectivity including to countries outside Europe –Reasonable cost Cons : –The perception that they would not adequately protect the confidentiality and integrity of the sensitive personal data involved and the lack of knowledge of the healthcare sector –Limitations in the guaranteed service levels offered

Based on literature, interviews, questionnaire 3 types of usage came out from questionnaires and interviews: – Performing arts (dance, music, theatre..) – Virtual environments – Access to databases Findings: AHSS 1/3

Categories of advanced applications clustered, based on technical requirements Real-Time Collaboration technologies Live performances – music and dance (e.g. streaming, video) Libraries and digital repositories; copyright issues AA Infrastructures and Trust Online surveys Findings: AHSS 2/3

These domains have intensified their usage of Internet technologies since the SERENATE report. Rising trend for increasing the number of multi- disciplinary scientific projects, involving people in Humanities and Social Sciences working together with researchers from computer science or engineering departments Need for providing specific training Findings: AHSS 3/3
