Based on literature, web searches for 18 countries and face-to-face discussions Provides an introduction to the health sector and an overview of the status of health data networking in several European countries, and offers an outline regarding the considerations a typical NREN must make when expanding into health research and the healthcare sector. Findings: Health 2/3 Most health data networks in Europe are mainly regional, few national NRENs are generally not involved in healthcare (exceptions are the Scandinavian and Baltic countries, the UK and Serbia where NRENs are involved in a few projects) The healthcare sector = political and legislative constraints. The sector is applications driven, but with a large number of applications and low level of interoperability Emerging applications require significant bandwidth (telediagnostics, remote radiology etc). The pharmaceutical industry and clinical research organisations use closed, leased networks and have relatively little demand for high- speed connections but are very demanding regarding the service level agreements and guarantees offered by their contractors.

Health and NRENs : pros and cons 3/3 Pros : –Excellent international high-speed connectivity including to countries outside Europe –Reasonable cost Cons : –The perception that they would not adequately protect the confidentiality and integrity of the sensitive personal data involved and the lack of knowledge of the healthcare sector –Limitations in the guaranteed service levels offered
