Richard Nixon

Richard Milhous Nixon (January 9, 1913 – April 22, 1994) joined the United States Navy after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served in the Pacific area. In 1968 he ran for President of the United States and he was elected.

From 1953 to 1961 Richard M. Nixon was the 36th Vice President of the United States. From 1969 to 1974 he was the 37th President of the United States. He was a member of the Republican Party, and he was the only President to be elected twice to both the Presidency and the Vice Presidency.

On the foreign front, the most immediate task facing President Nixon was a resolution of the Vietnam War. He successfully negotiated a ceasefire with North Vietnam in 1973, effectively ending American involvement in the war. He initiated the Anti- Ballistic Missile Treaty with the Soviet Union. However, his foreign policy was not without criticisms. On the domestic front, he created the United States Environmental Protection Agency. He was reelected in 1972.

There was a case of impeachment for his role in the Watergate scandal. Nixon resigned on August 9, It was the first and only resignation of any U.S. President.

The Watergate scandal was a political scandal resulting from the break-in to the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C.
