2. Facts 1. On 15 August 1971, Richard Nixon severed the dollar’s link to gold and destroyed Bretton Woods, the world’s monetary system. For three centuries before 1971, the world more or less had stable money. 2. He served as vice president under Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower from 1953-61. Nixon ran unsuccessfully for the presidency in 1960, losing by a very close margin to John F. Kennedy.
