3 ›New Federalism –Turn part of federal gov’t power to state & local gov’t. ›Stagflation –Economic condition marked by both inflation & high unemployment. ›OPECOPEC –Economic association of oil-producing nations that is able to set oil prices. ›Realpolitik –Foreign policy based on consideration of a nation’s power rather than its ideals. ›Détente –Willingness to negotiate & ease tensions between the U.S. & communist nations.

4 ›Impeachment –Process of accusing a public official of wrongdoing. ›Watergate –Cover up involving 1972 break-in of Democratic headquarters by Nixon supporters. ›Committee to Reelect the President –Nixon’s reelection group linked to the Watergate break-in. ›Saturday Night Massacre –Resignation of U.S. Attorney General & firing of his deputy after refusing Nixon’s order to fire special prosecutor investigating Watergate.

6 ›Silent Spring –Rachel Carson’s book demonizing pesticides (kept malaria thriving in developing countries) ›Earth Day –Day of environmental education, April 22. ›Environmentalist –Person who works to protect the environment from destruction & pollution. ›Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) –Regulates water & air pollution, toxic waste, pesticides, & radiation. ›Three Mile Island –Reactor overheated due to malfunction but no major damage.
