CONSTRUCTION & STRUCTURES 2 MAJOR PROJECT WAREHOUSE & OFFICE COMPLEX SCENARIO Isabella Czerniakowski

PROJECT BRIEF To obtain detailed understandings of commercial and industrial technology and construction processes within a problem based learning environment To learn how construction technology is developed and represented using models as primary form of communication To allow Construction Management and Architecture students different learning outcomes related to their separate interests within the same project framework To encourage architects to view construction technology as an outcome of a design process through the intensive referencing of the design process of famous architects To encourage construction managers to understand in detail a construction process through the intensive research and contact with builders and construction managers, completed and under-construction buildings.

LUDWIG MIES VAN DER ROHE Mies van der Rohe boldly stated, “I am completely opposed to the idea that specific buildings should have an individual character. Rather, I believe that it should express a universal character which has been determined by the total problem which architecture must strive to solve.” By this he meant that he wanted to create a Universal building, one not governed by its context, by its place or climate. He was concerned with the crafts of good building, rather than searching for an appropriate structural technology to suit abstract forms; as often done by Frank Lloyd Wright. This almost conservative way of thinking, deeply contrasts with his modern ‘Mesian’ concept of universal space and his innovative solutions to design and building problems. The results are beautifully crafted, innovative and modern buildings, demonstrated by buildings such as the Crown Hall complex. Superb example of his clear span designs. The roof is suspended from the underside of four steel plate girders which in turn are carried by eight exterior steel columns. These columns are spaced 60 feet apart with the roof cantilevered 20 feet at each end....Crown Hall, in which architecture, city planning, and design are taught, has a symmetrical plan about its short axis. Free-standing partitions at the height of the window partially subdivide the space. Only two enclosed service ducts interrupt the ceiling. A pair of interior stairways leads to a basement level used for workshops, offices, toilet rooms, and mechanical equipment....Natural ventilation is provided by louvers at floor level. The Creator's Words "The essence of space is not determined by the mere presence of limiting surfaces but by the spiritual principle of this limitation. The true task of architecture is to let the structure articulate the space; it is not the building that is the work of art but space."
