Lots Some One

“Global education is no longer a luxury that large, wealthy institutions might provide in the way of student trips and exchange programs. Now, it must become an intricate part of the mission of each institution as we prepare students for life and work.” Ed Coulter Community College Journal Aug/Sept 2006

Title VI-A The Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Language Program encourages colleges, individually or in combination, to carry out activities that “strengthen and improve” undergraduate instruction in international studies and foreign languages. Contact: Christine Corey U.S. Department of Education, International Education Programs Title VI-B The Business and International Education Program promotes “education and training that will contribute to the ability of US businesses to prosper in an international economy.” Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE)

Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program provides grants to enable U.S. colleges and universities to host visitinglecturers from abroad for a semester or academic year. Preference is given to institutions that are traditionally less involved in international exchange programs, including hosting visiting scholars, or that are serving minority audiences. Priority institutions include historically black colleges and universities, Hispanic serving institutions, tribal colleges, small liberal arts colleges, and community colleges. The program operates worldwide. Subject fields include the social sciences, humanities, and a range of other fields. Grants range up to $35,000, depending upon the grant length and location. Host institutions are expected to provide some type of cost share, in funds or in kind. Applications from consortia are welcomed. Institutional applications may designate a specific scholar by name or request that one be recruited by U.S. embassies or bi- national Fulbright Commissions abroad. Deadline: early fall

Tips & Pointers

U.S. Department of Education Grant Opportunities The program officers encourage potential applicants to review funded applications by scheduling an appointment in advance to visit the Department of Education office. Additionally, the program officer is willing and encourages applicants to send an abstract or two page executive summary to the program officer for feedback on a concept.
