History of the Meherrin Indians The Meherrin Indians spoke a language that was similar to the Tuscarora dialect. In their dialect Meherrin means “People Of the muddy water”. During the Tuscarora war of 1711-1713 the tribe provided Tuscarora with guns and ammunition and a safe haven in their villages for fleeing warriors.
