2 GEOGRAPHY The range that the Cherokee tribe inhibited was very large. It stretched over several states, mountain ranges, etc. that are well know today. Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia Great Smokey, Blue Ridge, Appalachian Mountains

3 CLIMATE Generally warm and wet Mild and humid winters The Cherokee lived in Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Alabama, Virginia, and West Virginia

4 ENVIROMENT (RESOURCES) Timber: cedar, pine, spruce, laurel, and holly Wildlife: deer, birds, and other animals Crops: corn, beans and squash

5 CHEROKEE HOUSING/SHELTER The Cherokee lived in settled, permanent villages that were usually set up near a river. Houses were made of rivercane and plaster, with thatched roofs. Most villages had palisades around them.

6 FOOD Cherokee women grow/make: Maize Beans Squash Sunflowers Pumpkins Melons Cornbread Tobacco Men hunt: Deer Bear Turkeys Rabbits Fish Turtles

7 CLOTHING Women wore deer skin tops, skirts, and moccasins. Men wore deer skin loin cloths in the summer and switched to deer skin leggings, shirts, and robes. Men commonly had body paint or tattoos. Women wore jewelry that was made of shells, silver, and painted clay beads.

8 SOCIAL ORGANIZATION The Cherokee society was divided into 7 clans of power the Blue Clan, Long Hair Clan, Bird Clan, Deer Clan, Wolf Clan, Wild Potato Clan, and the Paint Clan The Long Hair Clan gave Peace Chiefs and the Wolf Clan gave War Chiefs Cherokee men were hunters and gathers while Cherokee women were warriors and had power over their families

9 POLITICAL ORGANIZATION Cherokee villages were organized by a tribal council who were comprised of the village elders. The council chose two leaders (Chiefs) to run the village. One chief for peace, and one chief for war.

10 RELIGION The Cherokee believed that everything on earth had a spirit associated with it The Cherokees believed that if the spirits were disrespected in anyway then the American Indians would feel the wrath of the spirits The Cherokee believed that disrespecting the spirits would result in sickness, bad weather, failed crops, poor hunting, etc.

11 TRADE Trading The Cherokee tribe traded with English settlers during time of peace, as well as other tribes around them. What did they trade? Deerskins Pelts Bear Fox Raccoon otter Slaves Captured natives from other clans during battle Arrows What did they receive? Clothing Beads Food Weapons

12 CUSTOMS Cannot marry within the clan of their mother or father. Visit medicine man or woman when sick. Have an 85 character syllabary and a language called Tsalagi. Make fine baskets. Bury the dead the day after they have died. Religious dances had pre-selected dancers with a complex choreography. Some dances they took the scalps of captured prisoners.
